Let’s dig into the economics of the cloud, which is really a story about scale. You’ll see an economies of scale story shown by the graph on the screen. The X axis is the cost per server, fully loaded: power, cooling, people, all of that. And the Y axis is the size and the number of servers. What you can conclude from this data, is that as you get more and more servers in your datacenter, you get greater economies of scale. There are two interesting insights this reveals. The FIRST is that if you look at the bend in that curve, it happens at about a thousand to 10,000 servers. To give you some perspective, there's about 1,000 organizations worldwide with a 1,000-servers install base. And there's probably 200 that have10,000servers in their install base. SECOND - this model shows that the private cloud has lower economic benefits than the public cloud – for ALL sizes of cloud. I’ll go into this later, but the key difference between the economics of the private cloud and the public cloud, hinges on usage level, which I’ll go into detail on a bit later. To put this data in action – if you imagine a big private cloud instance – say one datacenter with 1,000 servers -- and compare it to a big public cloud, say with 100,000 servers – the savingsdelta between them will be a factor of 10. So, it’s 10 times cheaper per server in that public cloudthan in the big private cloud. And that's the kind of economics that will absolutely change our industry, and will potentially deeply impact your strategy as you think about cloud computing.
