 Is this free trade a success?

•1992: ASEAN became a trade bloc, called AFTA (Asean
Free Trade Area)
• 1995: Vietnam joined the AFTA
• 1997: Laos and Myanmar joined the AFTA
• 1999: Cambodia joined the AFTA

Aims Approach

 Increase ASEAN's The Common Effective
competitiveness as a Preferential Tariff
production base (CEPT) scheme
geared in the world → no common external tariff
market → ASEAN-members can
 Attract more foreign impose a tariff rate from 0-
investment to ASEAN 5%

Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
