Training Content is NOT simply about the slides
There are multiple tools available today to design and develop training content… Photo credit Michal Trochimiak
Even with so many of them, how do you know if your training content is effective?
As good content developers, we start with: The Objective At the end of the training, can the audience do this: RECALL UNDERSTAND APPLY
This is captured by Bloom’s Taxonomy…
Sadly, most trainers who deliver still struggle with getting audiences to just remember what was taught
What are the common mistakes in training content that leads to this?
RECALL: Audience remember only what is repeated. Mistake 1 : Not revisiting important aspects
Does your content design allow for an important point to be revised multiple times with different and interesting modes? Discussion Summary Exercise Test
A summary at the end of every module and before/after breaks keeps the thought flowing in the right direction.
RECALL: Audience remember stories Mistake 2 : Information is presented as a dump without connecting link
Does your content have a flow and structure to it so that when audience don’t need to remember different bits and pieces but 1 story?
Break down your content into modules that can be easily revised and summarized. This modular approach also helps trainers easily repurpose content fairly quickly.
RECALL: Audience remember what they ‘do’Mistake 3 : Spending more time on information download rather than on activities
Is every major learning point supported with an activity to apply the learning? Are these activities of different types so that boredom doesn’t set in?
When NOT to use activities? Avoid adding activities for points that audience already know. E.g. managing time is important.Don’t use activities for not so important points – just because you find the activity interesting.
3 common mistakes in RECALL Mistake 1 : Not revisiting important aspects Mistake 2 : Information is presented as a dump without connecting link Mistake 3 : Spending more time on information download rather than on activities
Next we look at common mistakes in…. RECALL UNDERSTAND APPLY
UNDERSTAND: Audience ignore the complexMistake 1 : Not spending time to simplify content
Does your content simply download content as it appears in the product flyer or a previous training program?
Content can be simplified with use of diagramsinstead of bullet points
Content can be simplified with use of analogy instead of technical explanations
Content can be simplified with use of visuals instead of words
No matter how complex the concept, if it is explained by use of visuals and diagrams it is possible for your audience to understand and recall exactly what was said.
UNDERSTAND: Audience get exhausted by doing just one thingMistake 2 : Not varying the methodology periodically
Does your content have hours of presentation followed by a role play at the end? This exhausts the audience.
UNDERSTAND: There are different learner typesMistake 3 : Using methodologies for only 1 type of learner
A simple rule of thumb used to differentiate learner types…. Theory focused Experience focused
Each type prefers to learn with different methods Theory focused Experience focused Case Studies Role Plays Discussions Movies Presentations Simulations Quiz Games Analytical Activities Case-lets
Whether you use VAK, Kolb’s Learning Cycle or any other model, use methodologies that appeal to different types.

Does your training start and end with 1) how the content applies to workplace 2) the benefit it brings and 3) the problem it solves Your audience will pay more attention when you SELL the training
