WHAT IS SOCIAL ISOLATION?
Social isolation is an objective
condition in which people have little
interaction with others. This can be at:
School
Work
Public
Home
3
WHAT IS NEUROSIS?
 Neurosis can be defined as relatively mild
personality disorder typified by excessive anxiety or
indecision and a degree of social or interpersonal
maladjustment
4
THE TYPES OF TECHNOLOGIES INFLUENCE
SOCIAL ISOLATION
 Cell phones
 Tablets
 Laptops and Computers
 Video game consoles
 Television
 Social media -Facebook & Twitter
5
ISOLATION
 The strongest criticism that can be made of social
media networks is that they deprive us of human
interaction, and create virtual substitutes that still
maintain emotional distance.
6
EXAMPLES OF HOW PEOPLE ISOLATE
THEMSELVES
o Technology has made us so addicted to the point
where people are isolating our selves on a daily
basis
 Some students, admit that they purposely isolate
themselves with their iPods between classes.
7
ADDICTION
 Dr. Jerald Block, author for the American Journal of
Psychiatry, says Internet addiction can now be
identified as causing “compulsive-impulsive
disorders, such as checking e-mail constantly or
always thinking the phone is vibrating.”
8
WHAT EXPERTS SAY?
 MIT professor and clinical psychologist Sherry Turkle:
 spent a decade looking at how people relate to “emotional”
robots, and our preoccupation all things virtual, over face to
face communication
 we “friend” people on Facebook, keeping people at an
emotional distance;
 we text and tweet in 140 characters or less, instead of picking
up the telephone and engaging with another
9
PROS OF TECHNOLOGY & SOCIAL MEDIA
 Increased productivity
 Communication is easier
 latest news and events that are going around in the
world
 interact with new people, interact with our existing
social ties using the Internet
 easier for job seekers to find jobs, locate old
friends, and stay in touch with friends and family.
10
CONS OF TECHNOLOGY & SOCIAL MEDIA
 Deprive us of human interaction
 Addicted without actually knowing it
 Feelings of loneliness are exacerbated by being
online too much
 Sites like Facebook create an artificial perception of
others
 Distractions at school, home & work
 Time waster
11
CONS CONTINUED
 Cell phones and computers has allowed work to
invade and destroy personal time and time with our
family and friends
12
STATISTICS
13
 In Korea, a Boot Camp Cure for Web
Obsession, "'Up to 30 percent of South Koreans
under 18, or about 2.4 million people, are at risk of
Internet addiction,' said Ahn Dong-hyun, a child
psychiatrist at Hanyang University in Seoul”.
CONCLUSION
 As a result, technology cause social isolation and neurosis
 Many studies from university psychologists have come to the
conclusion that many individuals in todays society are
addicted to their technology
 Addiction can also have negative effects including, lying, poor
achievements and social isolation.
 The addiction can lead to excessive use, withdrawal and
tolerance.
14
CONCLUSION CONTINUED
 The overrated use of Internet has brought coldness
and distance between people.
 Instead of meeting people, technology addicts
choose to stay at home and surf through different
web pages or even go alone in the park and be
alone with their pcs
 It's important for students to be talking to one
another at school, socializing and being part of a
community instead of listening to their ipods.
 If we actually put down our cell phones and laptops
we can engage in a better lifestyle with the people
around us. 15
