GCSE Exam 2014 Lessons

Order and Disorder
Create Hybrid Creatures
Create Hybrid creature collages
using a photo of yourself and an
animal collage. Or alternatively
create animal hybrids using two or
more animals.

When first encountering this body of photographs by Madrid-based
advertising and industrial photographer Miguel Vallinas it’s easy to view
it as a familiar “animals dressed as people” project. But as you look
closer you realize it’s quite a bit more than that. Aside from the solid
retouching, lighting and overall execution, Vallinas took this
anthropomorphic project a bit further and imagined what the fullyrealized wardrobe of each animal might look like if it were wearing
human clothes.
Titled Segundas Pieles (Second Skins), the ongoing series includes
some 50+ animals whose personalities seem to be perfectly amplified
by their pitch-perfect attire, making the portaits just a bit more human
than animal.
Trace/draw your Hybrid
creature collage. Use
Pen and ink and
watercolour to finish.
Alternatively create
etching using Juice
cartons to scratch into.
Then ink up and print.

Hybrid Animals by
Nicholas Di Genova
Begin to sculpt your
animal hybrid using clay.
Small scale sculptures
can then be fired and
glazed.
Homework
Take a photo of a room at home
and print this A4 or A3 size.
Work on top of your photocopy to
graffiti one side of the room.
See the example here by
internationally recognized graffiti
artist Tilt who has just completed
this interior design work for the Au
Vieux Panier hotel in Marseille,
France.
Tilt divided the room perfectly
down the middle, one half covered
entirely in his trademark vibrant
and bubbly graffiti and the other
half left stark white.
In your version make sure you
think about the surfaces in the
images and alter the graffiti to
work at different angles!
Layered photo drawings

Photographer Christoffer Relander created a series of photographs titled “We
Are Nature” using double and triple exposures. Using 2 sheets of acetate,
layer a photo of yourself with images from nature. Make a detailed tonal
drawing of the double image. Alternatively create this layered effect on
photoshop!
Clay tiles
Press man-made
objects into clay to
create natural
patterns

Use keys, nails, scissors,
Computer chips, wires, staples,
Paper-clips, wires etc to create
Natural looking shapes inspired

John Stezaker homework
Create a combined portrait
of yourself and a friend or
family member using
collage techniques (see
John Stezaker) These can
be create using horizontal
strips, or random shapes
as long as they create a
combined portrait
Aerial Landscape Lino prints

Collect “google maps” (using Google Earth) of the are you live in.
Make detailed line drawings from these and then trace onto Lino.
Cut your lino and make a 3 colour print from these.
Experiment with layering the print to create a 3d image.
Viewpoint collage
Alternatively look at the work
of Sohei Nishino and create
your own landscape collage
combining a combination of
aerial and straight on
viewpoints. You can create
your own city and surrounding
area.

Sohei Nishino’s dioramas
of Paris, Tokyo, and New
York, where aerial views
blend with straight up
façades to create
strangely disorienting but
beautifully evocative city
plans.
