Feature films
1. Feature Films
- A feature film is always a full length production. It normally lasts around the same amount of time however usually it
lasts around 70 minutes however depending on the production it can be shorter or longer. They emerged in the early
19 hundreds and they were originally silent. This was until the sound of Jazz was introduced around 20 years later.
- Some of the types of Genres that fall into the category of Feature Films can be things like Step Brothers which a well
known comedy or Bridesmaids which is also a well known comedy however they can be horrors or any other types of
genres.
- At the beginning they were originally released in only cinemas before they could be watched as home entertained
with devices such as computers, Netflix, DVD or Blueray.
- They can also be watched on devices such as mobile phones on the go. Meaning you can watch them on the move.
- They have many different types of genres for example this one is a well known comedy.
- These are often shot using single camera techniques. This is because they have a lot of money to spend and also a lot
of time. Because there will probably only be one they want to make sure they can get it as good as possibly can so
money can be stretched a lot more in this.
2. Series/Serial
• A series is a link up of a TV show that caries on. They can either be every night, every week and so on. They are often on the
same channel whenever they are on and usually at the same time. This is so they are I sink all of the time and people often
remember to watch them and the same time and on the same channel whenever they are on.
• They can also be watched on devices such as mobile phones and computers.
• They are produced using single camera techniques and multi camera techniques. They use the various techniques depending
on what they are filming. For example The Big Bang theory would be filmed using multi camera.
• These can be things such a sitcoms, entertainment, reality TV. They have quite a large variety and can be quite popular. They
are normally only on once a week and are often repeated quite often. Because they often done by using multi camera
techniques they are quite cheap to make.
• The difference between the series and serial is that a series can last for about 7 episodes each time however a serial will
only be on once.
3. Single Drama
• Single dramas use single cameras. They take a lot more time to make than sitcoms for example. They can be quite expensive
and have to be edited once everything is filmed, unlike sitcoms and a series that can be edited straight away whilst other
parts are still being filmed.
• They are basically films for your TV. After the first one, f it has been a success there may be one more made however there is
usually just the one that is made. They are usually on for 2 hours or a bit longer and are seem to be like films.
• An example of one of these was on BBC called ‘Murder’. I was a Drama and the story line was of two people that had been
caught up into a murder investigation. Single dramas like this are when you get dramas where you have two series that are
normally an hour long each however this has been combined together and created this Single drama.
4. Documentery
• Documentaries are non fictional stories telling a story. They story can be about a group of people, a persons life r even a
place. A story that is being re told and is giving information about that person or thing is a documentary.
• They can often run and it can go through for example it could go through there life for one yar or it could be an off chance
episode where there will be only one and no more after that.
• They are often shot using single cameras as it is cheap and is easier to film when in a documentary. It’s often easier to film
because you are following someone's life or telling and story therefore it isn't like a sitcom where people are just sitting
around talking. There is a lot of movement within it and although t can take quite a bit longer it’s often easier to do it this
was for this particular technique. However multi camera can be used it’s just not as popular. This will only really be used if
they are sitting around talking or if they are shooting in the same location with the same people for a while or more than
one scene. They are watched on tv however if missed you can watch it on places like BBc Iplayer or on catch up.
• An example of a documentary is Educating Yorkshire. Although this being a documentary its also a series. Throughout a year
it has filmed a school and shown its progression. It shows the ins and outs a school and often tells stories about individuals. I
believe mainly they would be using single cameras for this as there is so much movement within the school it would be
easier to film it this way and then take it away and edit it.
5. Soap Opera
• A Soap Opera is often referred to as a soap. This is basically a serial drama either on television or radio. They often feature
multiple related story lines dealing with the lives of many different characters. The stories in these series typically focus
heavily on emotional relationships to the point of dramatic parts of drama that involved in the lives of the individuals. They
focus on the highs and low points of a person or family and often have a lot of drama in to keep the audience interested and
make them want to keep coming back like a cliff-hanger for example, that’s what they can often end on each time.
• They are normally on more than once a week. Usually they are on every night during the week days and repeated on
weekends. They are watched on Tv but can also be watched online on things like BBC Iplayer.
• They use multi cameras for soap operas. This is because they have to release around 3 or 4 episodes every week. This was
they can edit each scene as they go through and its much cheaper and faster. They can create them so quick they can meat
delaines and more onto the next scene or episode quickly so they can keep running things smoothly.
• Every so often they may bring a new member in to often stir things up to keep the regular audience interested however for
the people that do watch these shows most nights or whenever they are on they know all the characters as they are put in
every episode. They are also set in the same village or town every time and as the programme starts the camera tends to do
a panning overview of the place.
• Some examples of these are Soaps that have been around for years. For example, Emerdale, Coronation Street and
Eastenders.
6. Music Video
• There are different types of music videos that are released, each telling there own story and sharing there own style. Some
examples of these are:
• Narrative - this tells a story Ed Sheeran // Small bump. For example in this he is singing about his baby about to be born
however it tragically dies. It shows him in hospital waiting in the waiting room.
• Performance – Band playing constantly or at a festival. For example Asking Alexandria // Not The American Average it shows
them playing at there gig and the crowd. This is what the video is focused on.
• Narrative / Performance is when the video shows the person or band focusing on the band or person the going back to a
video they have made with acting in for example. An example of this could be Mac Miller // Get Up. Through his video he
talks about how its important to live your dream so he shows you him working hard to get there and then him finally getting
to where he wanted to be at one of his gigs with all of his friends around him.
• Some music videos can have a lot of money spent on them however some not as much depending on the person or band.
• They often use multi cameras if the person or band want their video to be captured at a gig or festival. This is so when they
have a range of cameras they can capture everything and are not taking the risk with the one camera a missing some things
out as you only get the one chance. They can also easily edit it straight away and this way it is much cheaper.
• If the video is being set in a studio then they will spend more time on it and use a single camera. This way they can focus on
the band playing and edit it all after to how they want it.
• They can be watched on music channels on TV or on the internet on things such as Youtube.
