2. Ethan Allen: Childhood
Born January 21, 1738 in Connecticut
The first born of seven kids
Grew up in Cornwall on a farm
Was curious and interested in learning
His goal was to go to Yale College

Adulthood when he was 19
Volunteered for militia service
Married Mary Brownson
Farmed and part owned an iron furnace
Had five kids
Mary died in 1783

and political theory

4. Ethan Allen and the Green
Mountain Boys
Green Mountain Boys: a local militia with companies in each of the
surrounding towns
Allen was elected the Colonel Commandment, “the leader”
Allen explored the New Hampshire Grants and started buying wild
lands
The Green Mountain Boys were rebels and fighting with the New
York Government
Allen’s relatives formed the Onion River Company
6. Early Revolutionary
The Green Mountain Boys captured Fort
Ticonderoga
Tried to take Fort St. John, but were unsuccessful
Allen stepped down from the position of Colonel
Commandment
Allen was captured by the British in The American
Invasion of Quebec
He was imprisoned for about two years on British
ships and was eventually released
7. Return Home
Vermont Republic declared it’s independence in 1777
Allen spent the next several years involved in
Vermont’s military and political matters
8. Later Years Reason, a
He published accounts of his exploits and
book that attacked Christianity and the Bible
The book failed miserably
Allen had a second marriage, and married Frances
Montresor
Ethan Allen died on February 11, 1789 from bleeding
inside of his brain
