Denotation Jay-Z is positioned in front of the other artist to show his authority, and that he is the most exciting person in music. All the artist are dressed in black, which contrast, with the heading ‘ exciting people’. But all the imagery used in this magazine still follow the colour scheme of black white and red. There is a small amount about the content of the magazine – the reader will have to physically look inside to find any other interest to them, or the fact that it is a niche audience the readers don't mind what is in the inside as they will still purchase it. The price of the magazine is quite expensive. They have a niche target audience of a high social class. Jay-Z has a pull out quote saying “Noel, Thom Yorke and Me’ correct English is not used which is a representation of the hip-hop culture. It could have some underlying meaning to show how African Americans are less educated. Lady Gaga is dressed very sexual compared to the other artist- this shows that the audience attracted to this magazine are mostly males. It also influences females and western culture to believe that the success of women is gained by being sexual. Young females will aspire to be like her.
Content The logo of the magazine is one the top left handed corner. One of the major reason for this is because when people read, immediately they start from the top left handed corner. When people flick through a magazine, the first thing that would catch the readers eye is the “Q”. This then gets stored into the brain by people as its automatically stored. This can lead to making the magazine famous and aware people. The order is not sequential in page order, but it is ordered under headings : ‘Features’, ‘The Q review’ and ‘Regulars’ Continuous theme of red black and white. Reinforces that these colours represent Q magazine. Sexual images are again used for the female artists. Two different type of type faces are used. Bold, capitals for headings and less obvious fonts for the descriptions. Jay-z has the largest image on the contents page The webpage is displayed in the footer of the magazine.
Denotation Jay-z has the largest image in the contents to show he is the most important in the issue. This feature will attract the most attention. Jay-z’s eyes are covered which makes him appear more mysterious. The reader will have to read the article to get an insight of his life. The website is displayed on the footer of the magazine, as the internet is now where Q can access their target audience. This also means they can access a larger audience. Less hard copies are being produced, as it is more easier for the market to access the magazine online. Also self promotion. Not all content of the magazine is displayed, it is ordered under headings which makes it easier for the audience to find articles they want to read. Revealing images of female artists are again used, which emphasises that this magazine is targeted at a male audience. Two different typefaces are used to make headings stand out and catch the readers eye more.
Double Page Spread One page of the spread is used for copy, while the other is used for images. The background and language used represent the rock culture. The colours used again, follow the theme for Q magazine. Also reminds readers of a piano – since the band is called The Black keys A variety of formal and slang register is used. Written in capitals, which appeals towards the eye. This man is making eye contact with the audience. The image is a long shot, with a very dark background and the artists are both dressed in black.
Denotation The page with the image is very dark to show that the audience doesn't know much about the artists, where the page with the copy is very bright to show that reading the article will make any queries clear. A variety of formal and slang register is used. Formal to give a taste to the readers of how ‘the Black keys’ use to be. And slang to appeal to a rock culture of how the artists are now.
