2. Thiess is revolutionising the delivery of major rail infrastructure through our work
on the Footscray to Deer Park section of the Regional Rail Link project. Our ‘major
occupation’ strategy is improving project efficiency, accelerating the program and
reducing impacts on Melbourne's rail commuters.
Thiess is a member of the Alliance delivering the Footscray to Deer Park section of the Regional Rail Link, providing
a major new rail line for Melbourne as part of Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure project.
Our scope includes construction of 7.5 kilometres of new regional track, new rail bridges, two road/rail separations,
a new station and station upgrades, level crossing improvements, and design and construction of train control
systems.
Occupations (full railway closures) on this complex and multi-disciplinary project are critical to enable works in a
live rail environment. The Footscray-Deer Park Alliance has developed an alternative ‘major occupation’ strategy
which enables rail infrastructure to be delivered over durations of up to three weeks, rather than multiple short
occupations. This gives our team more time to plan and complete a significant amount of work, is less disruptive to
train commuters, and provides more certainty of trains resuming their services on time.
Further innovations include:
Reducing risk and costs for the client through 3D modelling of works under occupations to identify any
clashes in advance
Setting a new lighting standard for railway stations and car parks, using LED lights to lower construction,
operational and maintenance costs, and developing a new 6-Star energy rating tool for stations.
Our team’s dedicated focus on safety is evident across a range of innovative initiatives that aim to increase
personal accountability and make safety personal for every member of the workforce, including our subcontractors.
We have also focused on interface management, participating in a range of forums with contractors working on
adjacent projects within the rail corridor to enhance collaboration on issues impacting safety and schedule.
