Petty Officer ZYTKOWICZ is cited for superior performance of duties while serving as the Hazardous Materials Division
Petty Officer for the Facilities Engineering Department at Coast Guard Air Station Sitka, Alaska from November 1999 to
October 2000. Through keen foresight and expert planning, Petty Officer ZYTKOWICZ revitalized a stagnant
Environmental Management Office by spearheading numerous management initiatives which ultimately resulted in 100
percent accuracy in tracking all on-board hazardous wastes and materials. Additionally, he developed a base-wide hazardous
waste tank-tracking and monthly waste-generation report that standardized waste management accountability while
providing required regulatory documentation. Despite working outside of his rate, and with limited resources, Petty Officer
ZYTKOWICZ led a small team of Air Station personnel to dispose of over fifteen years of accumulated materials by
identifying and disposing of more than thirty-two thousand pounds of overstocked items. Under his superb supervision, the
Hazardous Materials total line item inventory was reduced by thirty-four percent .. Moreover, Petty Officer ZYTKOWICZ'
efforts reduced the Hazardous Materials Inventory sixty-four percent by volume representing an annual savings of $10,000 for
the Coast Guard. He also revamped Air Station Sitka's MSDS library by painstakingly researching, updating, and organizing
data for over 300 chemical products. Petty Officer ZYTKOWICZ' outstanding efforts provided not only Air Station Sitka,
but other D17 units as well, with more efficient procedures to track and reduce the total amount of hazardous chemicals
stored on base; a noteworthy accomplishment resulting in a safer work environment for Coast Guard personnel. Petty Officer
ZYTKOWICZ' diligence, perseverance, and devotion to duty are most heartily commended and are in keeping with highest
traditions of the United States Coast Guard.
