2 Capstone Reflection

3 We have one obligation to the environment and ourselves, which is to create positive changes and facilitate growth. My mission in life is to be a catalyst to that change and growth through ingenuity, handwork and dedication. With that being said, I was able to solidify this mindset as a result of my time at The Washington Center, and exploration of the Washington D.C. metro area. Each aspect of the program was an opportunity to learn about myself, my beliefs, and my obligation to the community and future generations. The first aspect I’d like to focus on is civic engagement or as I like to say, social responsibility. In the USA, the gap between the rich and poor should be shrinking with every generation, not expanding every quarter! The growing discrepancy is becoming more and more prevalent, especially in an area like Washington D.C. where the median income is six digits long but there is an enormous homeless population, how is that? This problem is in the forefront of my mind everyday when I pass multiple homeless people on a daily basis. Every time I saw someone asking for money, or simply relishing in their desire, I thought of the phrase “worlds’ moral compass,” how can this country be a world power and yet be unable to take care of its’ own citizens? How can there be billions; supposedly, budgeted every year, and yet have some people who must survive by eating out of trashcans in the same country? How can I pay $100 or more for a pair of jeans while there are people who can’t afford a meal from McDonalds? We must move from a selfish mindset to one of selflessness. As a result of this realization, my friends and I plan to volunteer at a food drive or simply pool our money and food and water around the district. Next, I would like to focus on the academic element of the program. For the last 10 weeks I participated in a course called From Ideas to Action: The Anatomy of Entrepreneurship. As the name implies, we spent our time defining what it means to be; and what makes, a successful entrepreneur. As a result of this class I was able to design a preliminary business plan for a socially responsible company that helps two very different demographics and benefits the community in almost every aspect. Through this class I not only gained a clear vision as to what my future company will look like, but at the same time, I was able to redefine what is important to me. It seems as like we get so focused on the endgame that we forget why we even started playing the game in the first place. Refocusing is essential to both personal and professional success. Noe my professional track, Business and Global Trade. Each week I was able to take something positive away from each event and apply those lessons to my professional self but the most impactful event was at George Washington University’s School of Business. During the event, we spoke with someone in
5.
4 their graduate admissions office. During the event she explained the programs that George Washington offers specifically and the graduate school admissions process in general. The most interesting topic she mentioned was their MF program which is a Masters of Finance. She outlined what type of people should and should not apply to the program. This made me rethink my career in finance and may have actually altered my career path because the world of finance is vast and a Masters of Finance degree may not be as beneficial as I thought it may be. Overall my professional track solidified my belief that I was born to live in the ever changing world of business. In closing, my time in this program has aided in the development of my professional self; form my civic engagement, to my professional track, to my internship, I was able to hone my skillset and feel much more ready for the “real world.” I remember my supervisor standing there amazed at my degree of professionalism and “ability to bring ideas into reality with ease.” Through the civic engagement element waved into this program, I noticed that I subconsciously think about my neighbor in every aspect of my life; for example, at my internship I think “if I were in my boss’s shoes how would I like this to look? How would I like people to view this? What message about our values does this send to outsiders?” With all of this under my belt, over the next three years I plan to not only graduate from my university, with honors, but also have a good job in finance and begin the groundwork for an oddjobs company in the greater Philadelphia area.

5 Informational Interview Reflection 1
7.
6 For my informational interview I decided to speak with Mr. Rodney W. Deloe, Chief Financial Officer at Gatesman+Dave Inc. Gatesman+Dave is one of Pittsburgh's fastest growing, fully integrated marketing communications agencies. I decided to interview Mr. Dole because he currently holds my dream title of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Grove City College with honors in the field of Accounting. After acquiring his degree he then went on to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA); one of the hardest certifications in the Accounting and Financial industries. As far as his professional background, he has extensive experience in the world of Finance and Accounting. First becoming a Plant Controller & Financial Analyst where he managed accounting functions for over $35M in a production facility and conducted merger/acquisition reviews for various facilities domestic and international. He then became a Controller (a very popular job for entry level accountant). While Mr. Dole was a Controller, he managed all financial functions of a $150 M research/manufacturing company and conducted joint venture, due diligence for international joint ventures including those located in AsiaPacific region. Soon after that he became the Director of Financial Services of a major corporation where he managed all internal accounting functions including financial reporting, accounts payable, general accounting and expense reimbursement. Due to his ambition he became a Regional Controller soon after and managed financial operations of five plants located in three states accounting for sixty percent of company annual revenue. All to gather he has twenty plus years of experience in the world of numbers and money! Through our conversation I was able to learn a lot and am now thinking about my career path a little differently. The first piece of advice Mr. Dole gave me was the importance of understanding and utilizing excel. “As a Financeperson you should know the ins and outs of excel (all of the equations and shortcuts).” Most people have Microsoft Office on their resumes but cannot do the bear minimum when it comes to excel. He also assured me that being uncertain about my exact career choice at this point of my life is completely okay. As long as I remain willing and open to both change and risk in my life I will find my path. This made me realize with that with me being so young and ambitious I have the world at my feet and cannot/should not put myself in this one Finance box. I asked Mr. Dole what his biggest regret was thus far in his career. He informed me that his biggest regret in his entire career was not allowing himself to grow and fully explore his other interest. Motivating me to fully embrace my other interest in the world of business and full embrace my “business development” internship that I am currently participating in. I am glad that I choose Mr. Dole as my first interviewee for many reasons but the most important reason would have to be gaining the realization that there is no one path to success or your dream. If I remain focused and diligent in my studies with a clear endgame, I am guaranteed to achieve my dreams! He really
8.
7 motivated me to focus more in and out of the classroom so that I hone the skills I already poses and gain more. The work I do inside of the classroom is just as important as the work I do in the classroom! To hear someone so accomplished and celebrated in his field say “… your path to success is not defined, it is designed by your own hand!” gave me a feeling of security and new sense of ambition!
9.
8 Informational Interview Reflection 2
10.
9 For my second information I choose someone not exactly in the field of finance but more in management (my minor); Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Julian Krinsky Camps and Programs (JKCP), Steven R. Robertson (Steve). JKCP is best described as an international summer educational and sports camp, based in the Philadelphia, PA area, which caters to all ages and areas of interest. Steve actually moved up in the ranks in a very organic way. He begin his work with the company as a tennis coach; through hard work, initiative, leadership and ability to take on responsibility he was able to move up the ranks and grow with the company. Before he knew it, most of the employees began to report to him and as a result he became Chief Operating Officer (COO). During his time as COO, he did an exceptional job growing the company into the international star it is today. As true for a lot COOs he then transitioned to CEO where he has even more say in the direction of the company. Due to the unique culture at JKCP, Steve has an even more unique leadership style that I believe differs from a lot of other executives. He is very hands on and leads by example type of person. I would categorize his style as more of a “code of honor” than only a way of doing things. He highlighted this with an analogy: “… if there is a piece of paper on the ground that I see, I pick it up; not because someone told me to but because I know it is the right thing to do…” He then went on to describe how he only hires people who have the same mindset as him and that will carry that believe in all that they do. I wish that this way of thinking could be found in more businesses across America but that seems to not be the case in many instances. With that being said, it would be easy for me to acclimate myself into an environment with this type of culture because I hold myself to the very same principles that Steve’s analogy alludes to. On the other hand, if I were to work in an environment that did not believe in the principles Steve believes in, I would have an extremely hard time doing my job and would be forced to seek employment elsewhere. Through our conversation I was able to learn more about Steve as a person then I thought. In retrospect the most surprising aspect of our conversation is that a person’s “business” self is simply an extension of their personal/real self. Ethical people do not do unethical business. As for the most interesting aspect about his field is that there are groups of CEOs that get together and help each other solve problems and host different training/informational sessions. As someone not in the “executive officer” world it is hard for me to believe that these people get together and actually support each other due to the negative
11.
10 stereotype that the world of business is cutthought but in reality it is just people trying to do whatever is in their best interest. As a result of Steve’s career path being so unique and nonlinear, I do not believe I will take the same route. I say that because Steve graduated from Johannesburg College of Education (South Africa) with a teaching degree, envisioned a career teaching and stumbled into his job. My path has to be more linear and intentional. I know I want to be a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and to gain the background necessary to achieve this goal, I must be very meticulous. Along with strong soft skills I must develop even stronger tangible skills, simply due to the nature of the job. The key to entering into the world of finance or management is attitude! No matter what skills someone may possess, it is imperative to have a positive attitude because people can sense if you do not. The people you work for, your employees and even your customers feed off the energy you put out. As a result you must always have a positive outlook. According to Steve one skill I should hone is, remembering people’s names and using them! Steve said “…it (remembering names) will open so many doors” and then went on to explain opportunities that presented themselves as a result of him using that skill. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Steve because it allowed me to pick the mind of someone I greatly respect and admire. He made me even more determined to achieve my goals and reassured me that I am on the path, my definition, of success.

45 Entrepreneurship Interview In my academic course; we conducted informational interviews with local entrepreneurs, and I choose my supervisor, Giuseppe Lanzone.
47.
46 The person I choose to conduct my interview with is my internship supervisor and Coowner of Peruvian Brothers LLC, Giuseppe Lanzone. Peruvian Brothers is a Food Truck/Catering company in the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia area; serving authentic Peruvian cuisine. The company began a little over 3 three years ago with the partnership of the two Lazone brothers (Giuseppe and Mario) and has since been recognized for their food and amazing story by various news publications such as: The Washington Post, The Washington City Paper, Washington DC Eater and many others. The brothers began with a desire to partner together in a project accompanied by a passion to leave a legacy behind. Built on the name of Giuseppe, former twotime Olympian and the recipes of former Yacht Captain Mario—the brothers are thriving in the completive fast paced world of food service. Despite the enormous stress and lack of sleep, Giuseppe would not have it any other way! I believe that is contributed to the fact that he is his own boss and is creating this company with his own two hands. Giuseppe believes that the most important lesson he has learned through his path to the Olympics and this venture is that “… there are always obstacles. You must push past them and stay focused on your goal.” When posed the question; “If you could, would you do this again and would you change anything?” Giuseppe excitedly replied “Yes! I would have put in triple my initial investment!” I always enjoy talking to Giuseppe because of his passion for success and love for all that he does. But his motivation is not as simple as the word, motivation, implies. Through this conversation, it is apparent that his real motivation is the prosperity and wellbeing of his family. The evidence is in everywhere you look; just as I stated above, he started this business because he had a powerful desire to do something with his brother. Most of the Peruvian Brothers LLC employees are either family members or close friends. When asked about the success of the company, almost always the first thing he says is highlighting the people around him. In fact when asked “What advice would you give someone looking to become an entrepreneur or just starting out?” Giuseppe replied “Make sure you have people around that you can trust and rely on!”
48.
47 I learned, and am learning a lot from Giuseppe, but from this conversation the most important lesson I took from this is: you cannot achieve successful alone, you need people to motivate and help you a long your path. At the same time that is what surprised me the most. A lot of people look at success and always say “I want that”, but never/rarely think about all of the people who have helped them along the way. As far as entrepreneurship, I feel as though there cannot be any questions. Either you are one or not one; it is something that you just do and fully immerse yourself into.
