Studie: Standards und Sicherheit
erhöhen Akzeptanz von M2M-Lösungen
Wie bekannt ist die M2M-Technologie beim Endkunden? Wie groß ist die Bereitschaft
von Privatkunden, M2M-Lösungen zu verwenden? Diese und andere Fragen sind
Inhalt einer aktuellen Studie, die Professor Jens Böcker von der Hochschule Bonn-
Rhein-Sieg im Auftrag der M2M Alliance e. V. durchführte.
I

Intelligent Metering Platform for Buildings
Greater Energy Efficiency,
Delivered via the Internet of Things
Energy services provider URBANA cooperates
withQSCsubsidiaryQ-loudtoofferacustomer
an intelligent energy-management platform
for the use in buildings. The concept is based
on the SOLUCON IoT platform developed by
Q-loud to create a reliable network of vari-
ous energy meters and sensors. The result is
a whole new range of functions designed to
increase energy efficiency.
T
he climate policy of Germany’s fed-
eral government is ambitious, as dem-
onstrated by its goal to deliver a 40%
reduction in harmful climate-changing
emissions by 2020 (based on figures for the
year 1990), with an objective of 80% or even
95% for the year 2050. Despite this, the policy
now appears to be in danger of falling at the
first hurdle. There had been a 24.7% drop in
greenhouse gas emissions by 2012, according
to a national inventory report, but scientific re-
search suggests that efforts being made to date
are not likely to be sufficient to fulfil the goal
set for 2020.
The onus is on the housing sector
Private households also bear particular respon-
sibility in this respect, as no fewer than 10% of
Germany’s emissions of greenhouse gases are
attributable to the combustion of fuel in private
households. This puts family homes in fourth
place in the country’s ranking of sources of
climate-changing gas emissions. The key part
of the measures entails savings of 25 to 30 mil-
lion metric tons of CO2 as a result of lower
energy consumption. The highest potential for
savings in this respect lies in the areas of heat-
ing and hot water, which account for over 70%
of a typical building’s overall energy consump-
tion. Germany’s approximately 2,800 housing
associations and similar organisations there-
fore play a particularly important role in this
respect. Any contribution that they might make
would soon make itself felt, given the large number of properties
that they administer between them.
However, before we can start identifying potential savings in the
housing sector, we need highly-detailed data about the energy al-
ready being consumed. The annual meter readings that might once
have been enough are insufficient here. The data that we do obtain
also need to be in real time and with full breakdowns. Only then
will homeowners and tenants be able to apply efficiency measures
in a correct and timely way.
Greater efficiency based on intelligent networking
The solution being offered entails the networking of “smart” me-
ters via what is known as the Internet of Things. This stands for a
vision whereby the Internet extends into the real world, in a way
that allows physical devices to become part of the web. They can
in turn be supplied with information, or function as Internet-based
elements in their own right. Just as people connect to the web, in-
animate objects of various types can also use the Internet to interact
with each other, make use of services and even generate their own
data. This has far-reaching possibilities; some of them still beyond
our imagination.
This networking of different devices forms the basis of a metering
platform for heat, gas and electricity consumption in buildings; with
heat-consumption, gas and electricity meters (or temperature sen-
sors) all sending frequent readings to a central platform, where the
data so obtained can be evaluated in real time and made available
for other purposes. The result is a whole new range of easy-to-
implement functions, designed to increase energy efficiency.
Implementation by cloud platform
Energy services provider URBANA is working in collaboration with
Q-loud GmbH, a subsidiary of QSC AG, on a customer commission
involving this solution. The system is based on Q-loud’s SOLUCON
cloud platform development, which is designed to create a network
of smart devices on the Internet of Things. It uses what is known as
“zero downtime architecture”, based on the redundant operation of
three geographically separate data centres. This guarantees both
maximum prevention of downtime and operation virtually free of
maintenance windows.
COSPACE-API, a fully documented, open interface, offers various
ways of integrating existing systems; including existing hardware.
11. April 2015 · M2M Journal 11
It can be addressed directly as a REST-API IP-based system. The
system administrator can create own subgroups of users, known
as “partners”, who can then create and manage their own user-
accounts. The API allows the user to log on to the SOLUCON plat-
form. The logged-on user now has access to a range of functions,
the details of which depend on the access rights previously con-
figured by the partner. The user can save files and objects on the
platform, and share them – and comments about them – with other
users. COSPACE-API also permits the creation of non-defined data
structures, thereby allowing SOLUCON to handle data of any type.
These are all saved within a JSON object on the platform, from
where they can be recovered or edited.
SOLUCON will operate on a redundant basis in three geographically separate,
high-performance data centres belonging to QSC AG in Germany.
The IP-address reference required for Internet access is generated
via DHCP from the customer’s IP network, as soon as the gateway
is powered up. The use of an HTTP / HTTPS proxy is likewise sup-
ported. The gateway allows the platform’s connection possibilities to
be extended to include, for example, wireless M-bus, Ethernet, USB,
868 MHz wireless with AES encryption or W-LAN. The SOLUCON
gateway creates an end-to-end encrypted connection to the platform
for the secure transmission of sensor readings and other data to a
receiving party elsewhere on the network. Measurement readings are
transmitted via GPRS / UMTS at low-cost M2M data tariffs.
Real-time analysis of meter readings
SOLUCON can supply the meter-reading data required for the pur-
poses of analysis. The possibilities range from simple CSV files to
integration into “big data” analysis systems such as SAP Hana. The
results of these analyses give a detailed overview of actual patterns
of consumption, and can be used to increase energy efficiency. This
basic analysis can be complemented by troubleshooting functions
such as the fast detection of energy leaks. SOLUCON should soon
be able to handle the connection of “smart home” installations in
each tenant’s home, thereby likewise improving energy efficiency
and reducing costs at a personal level. All this will deliver benefits to
tenants, landlords and of course to the environment and society as a
whole, thanks to the possibilities of flexible, digital, locally networked
energy management; with a radical sea-change from a demand-
driven approach to energy delivery to one driven by supply.
The SOLUCON Gateway provides, via
HTTPS, the link between the platform and its
corresponding metering devices.
SOLUCON permits the networking of devices on the Internet of Things. The
documented API allows the solution’s individual modules to be configured and
operated accordingly.
API allows the user to save sensor data to SOLUCON for the net-
working of smart devices. The basis for this is the COSPACE sensor
protocol, which specifies the packet structure of sensor data. All
currently-supported sensor types are documented in COSPACE-
API. This configuration can be extended at any time. The interface
also offers various ways to communicate with the user, such as by
phone, fax, e-mail, SMS or push notification.
The integration of devices such as heat-consumption, gas and elec-
tricity meters is carried out using wireless modules designed to link
them to the M-Bus interface. Optical readers can also be used
to transmit readings from existing analogue meters via a wireless
M-Bus. The SOLUCON gateway is used for the reception of these
data. This desktop unit uses an Internet connection to provide a
permanent link between the connected devices and the platform.

IoT Platform SARA Connect
Allows Real-Time Communication
between Sensors and Actuators
The system provider Welotec presents an innovative IoT service platform for equipping components and systems in automation
processes with a virtual representation for Industry 4.0 and IoT applications. The new software with the name SARA Connect not only
supports data transfer between completely different components, but also facilitates interface management, optimises production and
establishes new business models for maintenance and service.
S
ARA Connect opens up new capabili-
ties for visualisation of key figures and
for remote maintenance of plants and
systems. It meets the increasing re-
quirements of companies for extremely secure
higher-level server platforms that are protected
against third-party access and also easy to
manage.
The innovative software, which can be oper-
ated as an in-house server or in an external
computer centre, was developed by Welotec of
Laer in cooperation with SSV Software Systems
of Hannover.
SARA (Sensor-Actuator-Remote-Access) Connect
is especially suitable for use in process automa-
tion and instrumentation control technology.
The application is also recommended for appli-
cations in which networked and remote controlla-
ble devices as well as automated processes con-
tribute to higher process quality and improved
energy utilisation, such as smart grid, smart city,
smart home, smart building, factory automation
as well as machine data recording, analysis and
visualisation.
Real time communication
SARA Connect points the way to the future of
communication in the Internet of Things (IoT)
with cooperative distributed network and con-
trol structures. Data from all sensors, actuators,
controllers, drives and other network-capable
subsystems involved in the automation process
is collected in a higher-level system, saved and
exchanged in a standardised format. A stand-
ard interface allows real-time communication
between the networked components; corre-
sponding APIs (Application Programming Inter-
faces) support access via smartphone, data glasses or enterprise
IT solutions.
Special real time data channels (SC-RTDC) enable condition moni-
toring applications in systems and machines or online process moni-
toring in a continuous quality assurance chain. They also support
the input of key figure visualisation systems. Many Welotec products
can easily be connected to the new software. Simple connectors al-
low the integration of superimposed systems such as ERP (Enterprise
Resource Planning) or MES (Manufacturing Execution System). The
addition of an object database is planned for 2015.

The IoT Engine – Leveraging Digital
Value Chains
The IoT (Internet of Things) is a wide-
ranging concept that is driving a new
economic order. IoT solutions are having
a profound impact on the way business is
conducted: early adopters are seeing an
improvement in their competitive position
and a significant boost in profitability.
The tangible contributory benefits include
operational efficiency, enhanced customer
relations, insightful information based on
real-time data, and the ability to create
new business models.
T
he Telit IoT Engine drives this pro-
cess. It enables access to a wider set
of edge devices, expands their vis-
ibility, and shows how customers are
using the company’s products. In turn this
allows offers to be fine-tuned and opera-
tions with suppliers and other partners to
be optimized.
For example, real-time monitoring of in-
dustrial processes is an established m2m
solution that allows remedial action to be
taken before anything breaks down. An IoT
solution goes further: it allows companies
to become connected manufacturers. From
the supplier, to the plant, to the distributor,
to the products, everything in and around the manufacturing opera-
tion can be connected. This allows organizations to go deeper in the
demand chain, to not only monitor the plant, but also the asset creat-
ed within the plant as it goes through the distributor / dealer network
to the end customer. In addition the Telit IoT Engine enables seamless
transfer of data from the devices that monitor environmental data
and events through to the corporate cloud, where it is processed
into the real-time information that management needs in order to
make better-informed decisions. In addition, the IoT Engine employs
technology that enables this information to be integrated into an en-
terprise’s information and communication system.
How it works
IoT and m2m solutions broadly divide into three domains: data ac-
quisition, data transmission, and data processing. The Telit IoT En-
gine combines all three domains into a seamless value chain that
facilitates the delivery of robust, end-to-end solutions and minimiz-
es time-to-market. Data acquisition is provided by a comprehen-
sive portfolio of hardware: modules, which are the 24 / 7 beating
heart of the applications. Telit markets cloud-ready modules that
enable seamless transfer of data between devices and the cloud.
This is one of the many ways that Telit masks m2m communications
technology from the application developer.
Summary
The Telit IoT Engine leverages a comprehensive portfolio of prod-
ucts, value added wireless services and a cloud centric application
enablement platform that allows companies to run their applica-
tions in a private or public cloud. For more information about the
IoT Engine please visit www.telit.com.
