Did you notice how many people and who is using social networks? Using social media tools is not optional any more… it is imperative. If you are looking for employment or re-employment, one of the best things you can do to support your efforts is have a complete and optimized Linked In Profile Being #1 in Google might be great for a business, but being #1 on a LinkedIn people search might be your objective if you want to garner more attention.
The majority of jobs aren’t posted online. Hiring managers get a list of employee referral candidates before they even bother to view resumes from those who submit them online. Sometimes the listed jobs aren’t available or never existed in the first place. Many studies have noted that 80% of jobs are taken through networking, but few have sought to use the web to search and locate people they would actually enjoy working for at companies that they get excited about. Imagine I am an HR Manager and I am looking for a credit and collections manager for my Louisville office… so I type in credit Louisville. Look who popped up first!
Optimize optimize otimize Every piece of information in LinkedIn is Googleable. David has optimized his Heading as well as his summary with the keywords an HR Manager, or anyone else for that matter, would use when seeking candidates for that type of position. Please note- LinkedIn is NOT your virtual resume. It is a social network. If you are not schooled in marketing techniques, I highly recommend you partner up with someone who is so you can get the biggest bang out of your linkedin profile.
When you conduct a company search, LinkedIn will tell you who you are already connected with that is also connected with people at the company you are researching.

Don’t connect your personal Facebook and Twitter accounts to your LinkedIn account. Transparency is good – we don’t need to know EVERYTHING, but do need to know you’re a real person Offering real products and services If you connect them, you will end up with Duplicate posts. These two things are major pet peeves on LinkedIn. It IS a social network, but it is a professional one.
Use Linked In Answers They’re great for providing credibility and showing your expertise. They’re also an excellent source for information:
My Space, Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, and Linked In are the BIG 5 for business. There are hundreds if not thousands of social media sites you can get involved in. I could go on all day long telling you about all of them, but instead, I’d like to end the presentation in true social media style… by having a CONVERSATION.
