PHD Virtual and Citrix hosted a webinar on backup and recovery of Citrix XenServer. PHD Virtual provides backup, replication, and disaster recovery solutions for virtual and cloud environments. Their solutions include PHD Virtual Backup for scalable backup and efficient replication of VMs, and PHD ReliableDR for automated application and site recovery with failover testing. PHD Virtual uses deduplication and other technologies to reduce backup storage needs by up to 96% and speeds recovery by allowing restoration of individual files, VMs, or entire sites. The webinar included presentations on these products and their features, as well as a demonstration.

Lets get started by helping you understand a little more about our company…PHD Virtual provides the absolute best value in backup & disaster recovery assurance virtual and cloud environments. We help customers dramatically reduce the costs and risk of recovery within SLAsMore than 6,000 customers worldwide rely on our products (our customers are a who’s who among the Fortune 500 and we serve 1000s of mid-market companies too)Thanks to the amazing reception we have had from customers we have had 13 consecutive quarters of record revenue growth – This makes us one of the fastest growing software companies around the globeAnd, as you can imagine, our company has been recognized as standing out from our peers by receiving numerous awards as well as a direct investment by Citrix
With those business effects in mind, First, lets focus on what we need to protect and recover..A critical success factor to data protection and recovery at scale is the ability to effectively recover across the full continuum…Our customers need to recover granular items such as an a file/folder or an email…but they also need to recover:Application objectsVirtual disksVirtual machinesApplicationsBusiness servicesOr even a full siteAre these all items you need to protect and recover? Our customers tell us that there are specific challenges that make successful data protection and recovery across this continuum difficult to achieve
PHD Virtual Backup provides advanced data protection powered by our unique virtual backup appliance architecture. It is the #1 Virtual Backup solution and supports VMware, Citrix and soon Hyper-v.Efficient Backup and replicationProven, reliable, ultra-fast performanceEffortless scalabilityNo learning curve necessary, no training requiredInstant, flexible recoveryCloudHook. Customers retain the on-site control and recovery of local backups with the added assurance of off-site cloud storage options for backup Easily backup to major 3rd party cloud providers such as Amazon, Google and RackspaceKeeps data secure with government level encryption ReliableDR Provides disaster recovery assurance guaranteeing complete application and business service restoration within SLAs. Because ReliableDR testing is both automated and non disruptive to normal operations, testing can occur as frequently as SLA requirements dictate. As a result, changes to the operating environment that affect DR processes are quickly and automatically discovered.Guaranteed failover/failbackAutomated, continuous DR testing – Tests go beyond data restoration and include restoration of IT services and business applicationsAutomates frequent testing that is non-disruptive to normal operationsTests and reports against RPO/RTO requirements Orchestrates automated service recoveryFlexible replication optionsCompliance reporting Recovery Management Suite Unified data protection and disaster recovery solution(incorporating all 3 products) that dramatically reduces the cost of data, application, business service and site-wide restoration within SLAs. PHD Virtual Backup provides reliable backup, replication and recovery of virtual machines and individual files. CloudHook provides cloud storage. ReliableDR adds business service-focused, application-aware disaster recovery failover/failback, testing and orchestration in order to achieve disaster recovery assurance.
Lets turn to our award winning products and start with our Data Protection product called PHD Virtual Backup and ReplicationPHD Virtual Backup and Replicationprovides advanced data protection powered by our unique Virtual Backup Appliance architecture. It is the #1 Virtual Backup solution and supports both VMware and Citrix.Let me start by covering few key items before we give you an overview of specific capabilities and how it compares against competitorsLike all PHD products, its super easy to use, it installs and configures in minutes, requires no training and you can literally set-it- and forget itFor most customers its all about time to recovery and you’ll find no one is faster – and no product performs faster – We know that backup windows are short – so you need a product that moves at the pace of your businessYou’ll find we use significantly less storage than any other alternative because of our powerful source-side de-duplication capabilities and incremental back-ups which store only changesOne of the key differentiators of our product is our Virtual Backup Appliance architecture. This patented capability is our secret sauceThe VBA plugs directly into the hypervisor Offers the most effective virtual backup at the lowest cost – because our unique VBA architecture requires no physical machines or 3rd party software - lets take a look at how it in more detail…
The VBA is truly unique. The best way to describe this is to help you understand how it compares to architecture delivered by our competitors – Competitive alternatives:Add complexity and cost:They require separate physical servers and 3rd party software deployed outside the virtual environment (Veeam for example requires a separate windows based proxy server –and you'll have to maintain this –patch it upgrade it, secure it…what a hassle! And you’’ need an adapter (HBA) for the storage)Load balancing and solving for fault tolerance is more complex tooHarder to scale: Ease and speed of scaling is a primary driver of virtualization –your backup product should never limit this benefitTo scale you'll need to deploy and manage multiple physical serversLets contrast the this approach to the PHD’s VBA:Simple and less expensive:The VBA has a 100% virtualized footprint. This means it deploys as a virtual appliance, is managed directly from the v-sphere or XenServer hypervisor and requires no physical servers or additional softwareAdditional VBAs are easily deployed which enables you to quickly meet your organizations performance requirements or fault tolerance needsScales Quickly and easily: You can quickly deploy VBAs to scale and meet to meet enterprise needs – and its all done seamlessly within your virtual environment
Primary storage is a precious resource and can be very expensive. Data that does not need to be accessed right away can be archived to the cloud. The cost for archived storage in the cloud can be significantly less than the cost. (x percent less). So if you have not yet taken an inventory of primary data that could be archived, you may be missing out on $1000s of dollars worth of savings over the months and years.
PHD Virtual Backup powered by PowerControls is one product that gives you granular search and restore for both Exchange and SharePoint. If you asked what the primary benefit is, I’d say that it’s fast and easy. PowerControls saves time. The interface for both products is basically the same, drag and drop capabilities makes it fast…The search functions are powerful, and you can search within attachments…(400 different file types)So I’ll go through the main benefits…of Exchange first, then the SharePoint
We scale easily because of our VBA architecture. Scale out by adding VBA’s. Very little impact on production.
DashboardLet’s provide you a closer look at the new interface. We’ll start off with a closer look at the dashboard. The first thing you might notice is that the interface is more visibly appealing than previous versions. We listened to feedback from our customers and in addition to the appeal, and easier navigation that you see here, you also can see the most important metrics concerning average backup and recovery speeds,… what has been protected and what hasn’t, and any errors. In addition you can see storage metrics for each VBA,… any alerts…or as in the case of what you are seeing here,… a statement that, there are no alerts. And also you can see which jobs are running, and the progress of active jobs.
ProtectWhat you’re seeing here on the Protect tab is the status of your backup jobs. Green check marks are good, red x’s are bad… So everything looks OK on this slide.
RecoverAnd on this slide we are looking at the recover window. You can see the type of backup mode,… virtual full, or incremental,… for each recovery and VM…… Also to the right you see now how easy it is to perform a filter search by VM name,… environment—more on that later… And you can also filter by host,… type,… and date range.
JobsHere we are taking a look at the Jobs tab. The way this is laid out now, it is easier to segment your job types…active jobs versus recent jobs, for example….. And you can quickly see when each job was created, scheduled, and last run.
ReportsAs for the reports tab…... Here, depending upon the date range you select, you’ll see the VMs that are protected and unprotected,… and your backups,… successful or otherwise. (feel free to add any stories that you might have that relate to reports)
