Bigotry, Football and Scotland
Edited by John Flint and
John Kelly
Paperback ISBN:
978-0-7486-7037-6
£19.99 240 pages
Release date: 30 June 2013
As one of the more prominent national debates in Scotland during recent
years, bigotry and prejudice in professional football are omnipresent
themes in newspaper headlines across the country. While high-
profile controversies and disorder remain rife in the game, this exciting
new title presents a series of eye-opening explorations into the
historic relationships between sectarianism and football, and the
extensive ramifications they have for Scottish society.
Featuring a foreword written by former Scottish First Minister,
Lord Jack McConnell, Bigotry, Football and Scotland challenges
the received wisdom about sectarianism in Scotland’s national game and
in so doing supports efforts to resolve prejudice and promote diversity.
Contributors from both scholarly and journalistic backgrounds address
a number of pertinent issues: How does bigotry affect the wider
Scottish population? What plans are in place to try and reverse the
negative effect such behaviour has on society? To what degree should
governing bodies such as the SFA be held accountable? Offering
analyses through such contexts as gender, class and geography,
specific areas covered in the book include:‘A very welcome
contribution
to our national
understanding’
–Lord Jack McConnell
of Glenscorrodale
