Introduction
• The terms "wind energy" or "wind power" describe the process
by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or
electricity.
• Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into
mechanical power.
• This mechanical power can be used
for specific tasks (such as grinding grain
or pumping water) or a generator can
convert this mechanical power into
electricity to power homes, businesses,
schools etc.

Gearless Blade Tip Power System
• Blade Tip Power System (BTPS) replaces the traditional gear box, shaft
and generator of current wind turbine technology.
• The gearless Blade Tip System creates a “free wheeling’’ turbine,
generating energy from the blade tips (where the speed lies) rather than
through a mechanical centre gear.

M.S.Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies

5
BTPS Design
• It utilizes a system of magnets and stators
surrounding its outer ring.
• Captures power at the blade tips where speed is
greatest, practically eliminating mechanical
resistance and drag.
• Rather than forcing the available wind to turn a
generator, the perimeter power system becomes
the generator by swiftly passing the blade tip magnets through the copper coil banks
mounted onto the enclosed perimeter frame.
• The Blade Tip Power System addresses past constraints such as size, noise,
vibration and output.
M.S.Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies

Description

M.S.Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies

7
Description
• This design using BTPS allows kinetic energy to be harnessed from a smaller,
more economical swept rotor area, to pass it’s magnets at as high a rate of
speed, it has similar generating capacity as the traditional turbines. Advantage
of this is, it can be operated in any wind speed.
• The electricity is generated through stator technology using the patented BTPS
at the outer perimeter of the wheel, where the speed lies. Speed travelled at the
outer perimeter of the circumference is 9 times greater than the feet per second
speed at the centre shaft, thereby eliminating the need for a traditional gear
drive to induce higher revolutions per minute at a generator. This reduces the
manufacturing cost.
• The different rotor design, a free spinning wheel, does not experience those
excessive harmonic vibrations.

M.S.Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies

8
Technical Specifications
• Wind turbine is a gearless wind turbine that measures just 6 feet (1.8 m) in
diameter.
• Weighs 241 lbs (110 kgs), Directional Fins: 16 lb. (7.3 kg) and produces up to
1500 kWh’s per year depending on height and location.
• Made of polycarbonate, aluminum and steel. Blades: 20 Glass Filled Nylon (10
short and 10 long)
• Sound Power Level: At 10 ft. (3 m) away, less than 35 dB at 30 mph (13.4 m/s)
• Temperature - Operating, Storage and Transportation:-40 C to 60 C(-40 F to 140 F)
• Wind Turbine’s BTPS perimeter power system and unique design of multi-stage
blades allows the system to react quickly to changes in wind speed.
• This ensures that the maximum wind energy is captured without the typical noise
and vibration associated with traditional wind turbines.
• Wind turbine has an increased operating span over traditional turbines with a startup speed as low as 0.5 mph (0.2 m/s), cut in at 3 mph (1.34 m/s), with an auto shut
off at 38 mph (17.0 m/s), traditional gearbox turbines require minimum wind
speeds of 7.5 mph (3.5 m/s) to cut in and start generating power.
M.S.Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies

9
Conclusion
• Wind energy harvesting is one of the fastest growing sources of electricity
and one of the fastest growing markets in the world today.
• Some of the benefits associated with wind energy harvesting:
 Green Power: The electricity produced from wind power is said to be
"clean" because its production produces no pollution or greenhouse
gases.
 Sustainable: Wind is a renewable energy resource, it is inexhaustible
and requires no "fuel" besides the wind that blows across the earth.
 Affordable: Wind power is a cost-competitive source of electricity,
largely due to technological advancements.

  • 8. Description • This design using BTPS allows kinetic energy to be harnessed from a smaller, more economical swept rotor area, to pass it’s magnets at as high a rate of speed, it has similar generating capacity as the traditional turbines. Advantage of this is, it can be operated in any wind speed. • The electricity is generated through stator technology using the patented BTPS at the outer perimeter of the wheel, where the speed lies. Speed travelled at the outer perimeter of the circumference is 9 times greater than the feet per second speed at the centre shaft, thereby eliminating the need for a traditional gear drive to induce higher revolutions per minute at a generator. This reduces the manufacturing cost. • The different rotor design, a free spinning wheel, does not experience those excessive harmonic vibrations. M.S.Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies 8

Conclusion • Wind energy harvesting is one of the fastest growing sources of electricity and one of the fastest growing markets in the world today. • Some of the benefits associated with wind energy harvesting:  Green Power: The electricity produced from wind power is said to be "clean" because its production produces no pollution or greenhouse gases.  Sustainable: Wind is a renewable energy resource, it is inexhaustible and requires no "fuel" besides the wind that blows across the earth.  Affordable: Wind power is a cost-competitive source of electricity, largely due to technological advancements.
