What is Reading?
 According to Toit (2001)
“Reading is a process of thinking, recalling, and relating
concepts under the functioning of written words.”
 Irvin (1998) describes the reading process as;
“The interaction of what is in the head with what is on
the page within a particular context that causes students
to comprehend what they read.”
Situation of Reading in Pakistan
 Majority of our people have good reading habits in the
past times in our country.
 People used to read books, parents and grandparents
used to read book in front of their kids and tell them
stories.
 Pakistan has too entered in the digital age and with
emergence of e-media and has weakened the bond
between the book and its readers.
Reading through Motivation
 Motivation is the biggest factor in this area. Where all
the techniques and strategies failed to do a positive
thing then motivation works there as a guiding star.
Scared about committing mistakes.
Inadequate vocabulary.
Lack of confidence and competence in English.
Objectives of the study
 To study the causes of student’s hesitation in reading
English.
 The explore ideas and strategies of teachers related to
reading skill in EFL.
Reason for lack of Motivation in
students for reading
 Fails to understand due to Problem in language
proficiency/ability
 Peer rejection
 Depression
 Fear of failure
 Nervous habits
 Teaching methods and styles
 Students own understanding
 Lack of appreciation

target language.
 Motivation is the major key that triggers the learners
motivating booster.
 Some common problems that teachers have in dealing
with reading are; learners lack of
motivation, hesitation, insufficient vocabulary etc.
 Teachers can adopt multidimensional strategies to
enhance reading in EFL context.
Conclusion
Recommendations
Praise and encouragement for positive efforts by the
learners will help to keep motivation up.
Meaningful, relevant and motivating tasks to do.
Teacher can arrange some sort of reading competitions
in the class so that learners might feel It as a fun based
activity rather than boring reading task.
Reading session in terms of three phases i.e. pre-
reading, while-reading, post-reading must be followed .
