2. Melissani is one of the most famous natural sights in Kefalonia, Greece.

3. It is an underground lake, which was discovered in 1951 by the
speleologist Yiannis Petrohelos.

4. In 1953 during the earthquakes the cave roof fell
in, creating amazing light displays on the cave
walls.
În 1953 în timpul cutremurelor acoperisul a cazut în pestera, dand
luminii posibilitatea de a patrunda in pestera si de a crea efecte
uimitoare pe peretii acesteia.

11. It may be very hot outside but in the cave it is always cool and
damp. There are boats waiting to show you round the lake.
Afara poate fi foarte cald, dar in pestera este întotdeauna
rece si umed.

and opened to the public in 1963.

18. However, the locals were aware of it's existence much, much
earlier as a shepherdess had gone missing and fallen in whilst
looking for a sheep.

19. The water reach a depth of 39 meter. The cave is 160 m long and 40
m wide
Apa ajunge la o adâncime de 39 de metri. Pestera este de
160 m lungime si 40 m latime.

20. In the 1963 excavations, Marinatos found a clay figurine depicting
the god Pan, a disc showing Pan surrounded by dancing nymphs and a
fragment showing the figure of a woman in relief who is believed to be
the nymph Melissanthe (from which the lake name is derived) who fell
in love with Pan. Sadly she drowned in the lake when he rejected her.

sapaturi,s-a gasit o figurina de de
lut reprezentând zeul Pan, un disc
care il arata pe Pan înconjurat de
nimfe dansand.Un fragment
reprezinta silueta unei femeie în
relief, care este considerata a fi
nimfa Melissanthe (de unde si
numele pesterii), care s-a
indragostit de Pan. Din pacate ea
s-a aruncat in lac inecandu-se,
deoarece a fost respinsa de zeu.
