eLearning is becoming increasingly embedded in higher education and plays an important role in postgraduate medical training and professional development. Learners engage in self-directed, flexible learning through virtual learning environments that allow for activities like self-assessment, discussions, case studies, and conferencing. Resources are available through these environments like documentation, multimedia content, and RSS feeds. Examples of virtual learning environments discussed are EEMeC, eSSQ, and eScript, as well as virtual patients and new approaches using virtual patients 2.0.
