Oryza Afternoon Recap – Chicago Rough Rice Futures Look to Recover from
Recent Losses, Trade Activity Slows
Dec 19, 2013

Chicago rough rice futures for March delivery settled 9 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $15.315 per
cwt (about $338 per ton). Rough rice futures retraced a good portion of losses sustained yesterday as selling and
spread activity slows ahead of the holidays approaching in the coming weeks. The open interest table shows that
as of the close of the market yesterday there are fewer than 2,000 contracts open for January delivery with the
majority of the trade already focused on March. Traders expect the bulk of the trade activity to remain focused
on moving the remaining nearby contracts forward and thus see underlying support for the January futures. The
other grains finished mostly higher today with wheat logging the only loss; soybeans finished the day about
0.4% higher at $13.1900 per bushel; wheat finished about 0.3% lower at $6.1175 per bushel; and corn finished
the day about 1.3% higher at $4.3050 per bushel.U.S. stocks erased the bulk of their losses on Thursday, with
the Dow industrials extending gains after the prior day's record close, as the energy sector rose along with the
price of oil. Wall Street retreating after the prior day's Fed-inspired surge, after existing home sales fell to their
lowest level in nearly a year and new claims for jobless benefits climbed last week to a near nine-month high.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average cleared losses to turn higher.
The S&P 500 was down less than 1 point, with utilities the leading laggard and energy the best performing
among its 10 major sectors. The Nasdaq fell. U.S. stock markets are currently trading about 0.1% higher, gold
is trading about 3.4% lower, crude oil is seen trading about 1.2% higher, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading
about 0.6% higher at about 2:00pm Chicago time.Turning to the daily continuation chart of Chicago rough rice
futures for March delivery, the market managed to recover nearly half of the losses sustained yesterday.
Although buying interest improved the session high of $15.365 per cwt (about $339 per ton) was made
overnight, likely caused by the triggering of a stop order on low volume. But with the opening of pit trading this
morning the bulls failed to follow through and prices spent the majority of the session trading within 5 cents per
cwt (about $1 per ton) of unchanged. Today’s push higher saw prices cross back above the lower Bollinger
band which is noted at $15.230 per cwt (about $336 per ton) and now acts as the current price objective. The
market remains in bearish territory and the current trend of lower prices remains intact. Today’s trading range is
noted as $15.280-$15.405 per cwt (about $337-$340 per ton).Wednesday, there were 2,544 contracts traded,
down from 4,167 contracts traded on Tuesday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on
Wednesday increased by 81 contracts to 7,401.

Saudi Arabia Fines Rice Traders Over Price Hike
Dec 19, 2013

The Saudi Arabia government has fined rice traders SAR40 million (about $11 million) for increasing prices of
rice and reducing the weight of rice in packets sold by them in the market. ccording to Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, the
Minister of Commerce and Industry and chairman of the Council of Competition Protection (CCP), some rice
traders were found to have reduced quantity of rice in packets and increased rice prices without informing
consumers about the change.Rice consumption in Saudi Arabia is estimated at around 1.25 million tons

annually, and the entire demand is met by rice imports mostly from India. Earlier this month, local sources
reported that rice prices increased to around SAR 235 – SAR 290 per 40 kilograms (about $1,566 - $1,930 per
ton) which is about 20% - 30% higher than prices in the previous month.Traders say that rice prices have
increased due to higher prices quoted by exporting countries. However, local sources claim that rice prices are
increasing due to the monopoly of Indian rice traders in the Saudi Arabia rice market.

India Government Considers Increase in Rice Buffer Norms
The Indian government
may increase buffer norms
for rice and wheat in the
central pool to ensure
availability of food grains
in the country for the
implementation of the Food
Security Act.Today, the
Cabinet referred a proposal
by the National Centre for
Agricultural Economics and
Policy Research (NCAP) to
a panel over a possible
increase in buffer norms for
rice and wheat by around
50% from the current norm
of around 21 - 32 million
tons of food grains to meet the requirement under the Food Security Act.It is estimated that India’s food grains
requirement under the National Food Security Act will increase to around 62-64 million tons, up from the
current 56-60 million tons. The panel includes the Agriculture Minister, the Finance Minister and
representatives of the Planning Commission.Local sources say that increasing buffer norms for rice and wheat
does not serve any purpose as current stocks are consistently about 100% than the required norms.
Moreover, increasing buffer norms will make open sales of food grains difficult which may lead to higher
prices and storage losses. Some experts say that increasing buffer norms for rice and wheat may also force the
government to import food grains in a low production year or if domestic procurement does not meet the
target.India's buffer and strategic reserves were last finalized in April 2005. Strategic rice reserves stand at 2
million tons at any point of the year, while it is 3 million tons for wheat. The peak buffer norm for rice is 12.2
million tons as of April 1, while it is 17.1 million tons for wheat as of July 1. About 46% of total rice

Vietnam Food Association Expects TPP to Boost Rice Exports
Dec 19, 2013

The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) expects Vietnam's rice exports to increase significantly after Vietnam,
Japan and countries in the Americas conclude the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations.Lower demand
from traditional buyers in Asia is forcing Vietnam to look to new markets and to increase sales in smaller
markets such as the U.S. According to the VFA, rice exports in 2013 are expected to fall short of the targeted
6.7 million tons by around 100,000 tons despite lower export prices this year.
The VFA general secretary told local sources that the average rice export price is about $14.50 per ton lower
than last year’s average of around $435 per ton, but exports are likely to decline to around 6.6 million tons in
2013 due to low purchases by Asian countries. Indonesia did not buy any rice from Vietnam this year, while the
Philippines and Malaysia have reduced their purchases, he said. However, the VFA is hopeful that rice exports
to the Americas and Japan will increase after TPP negotiations. The VFA says that the price of Vietnam rice is

much lower than Thailand rice and Vietnamese rice gaining popularity in the U.S. and other countries in TPP
negotiations such as Japan, Canada, Chile, Peru and Mexico. The VFA has requested the government to help
exporters gain wider access to the American and Japanese rice markets after TPP negotiations are over.

Thailand Rice Farmers Urged to Increase Efficiency, Rice Yield to Compete Globally
Dec 19, 2013

Rice farmers in Thailand should merge rice plots and make use of farm machinery to improve rice yield and
reduce production costs, according to the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) and Thailand’s
caretaker agriculture minister. The Thai government buys paddy rice from farmers at prices around 40% higher
than market prices under the rice mortgage program which started in 2011 to boost farmer income. However,
this has led to a sharp decline in rice exports. According to the Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA)
President, Thailand has lost export competitiveness in recent years and traditional buyers of Thai rice such as
the Philippines and Indonesia have shifted to rivals such as Vietnam due to high prices of Thai rice.
The TDRI representative Nipon Poapongsakorn says the rice mortgage program should not be continued as
global prices are likely to decline in 2014 and in coming years due to declining rice consumption.
Instead, he suggests, Thai rice farmers should improve efficiency to reduce production costs. The caretaker
agriculture minister Yukol Limlamthong told local sources that Thai rice faces increasing competition from
Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos in addition to Vietnam. He says that rice productivity is as low as 1.8 tons per

hectare in some parts of Thailand and the government zoning policy will help improve productivity and enable
Thai rice to compete globally. However, farmer representatives in Thailand say that the zoning policy is
unlikely to reduce increasing production costs of rice farming in Thailand.

Achievements and Controversy Surrounding Rice, Vitamins, and GMO Crops
Dec 19, 2013

With rice a staple food product around the globe, it’s not unsurprising that it has been a crucial part of the
development of many different cultures and cuisines. What fewer people know is the role that rice has played

in the development of our scientific understanding of vitamins and how they work in the body.In the mid-1800s,
a disease called beriberi became frighteningly common. Sufferers had weak arms and legs and found it difficult
to walk. Scientists could not figure out what caused it or how to prevent it.
During the 1880s one scientist named Christiaan Eijkman began studying chickens with beriberi-like
symptoms. He didn’t make much progress until he noticed some of the chickens had mysteriously recovered
and were no longer exhibiting symptoms. He figured out that the chickens’ food had changed: they had
previously been fed leftover milled military rice and were now being fed civilian brown rice. When Dr.
Eijkman’s chickens recovered so quickly from a minor change in diet, he deduced that something in the outer
layer of rice prevented beriberi, proving the disease was not the result of blood contamination or temperature
variation.
Instead, thiamine in the bran and endosperm of rice prevented the development of beriberi. Dr. Eijkman’s work
was furthered by Adolphe Vorderman and Casimir Funk, who shortened “vitamin B1 thiamine” to “vital
amine,” thus coining the new word “vitamin.”Most nutritionists agree that it’s best to get one’s required
vitamins and minerals from a variety of food sources – grains, vegetables, fruits. However, not everyone has
the luxury of consuming a diverse diet due to cost or access. Today, consumers don’t have to choose between
better nutrients (brown rice) and longer shelf-life (milled rice) because of a process called parboiling. In the
1910s a German-British scientist named Erich Gustav Huzenlaub developed an improved form of parboiling
(known as the Huzenlaub Process) that involves vacuum-drying the grains, steaming them, vacuum-drying them
again, and then husking them. This method achieved several beneficial results.
It preserves more of the nutrients in the rice, making it 80% nutritionally similar to brown rice. Parboiling also
extends the grain’s shelf life, making it more resistant to weevils, for example. Finally, it lessens the required
cooking time. These last two benefits, the decreased cooking time and weevil-resistance, made parboiled rice the
perfect sustenance to air-drop to troops in the field during World War II. During the War, Huzenlaub created a
company to produce this parboiled rice and sold all of its production output to the U.S. and British Armed
Forces.Parboiled rice, or converted rice as it’s sometimes called, is available in most grocery stores today – in
fact, some estimates claim that 50% of global paddy production is parboiled today. It’s especially popular in
areas where citizens might have trouble eating a healthy, varied diet due to war, poverty, or political unrest, and
is largely the reason beriberi is no longer the endemic disease it once was.
The nutritional benefits of parboiled rice are especially interesting given recent studies of the effects of
supplemental vitamins and minerals, an industry that has exploded globally in the last decade. In the December
17 edition of Annals of Internal Medicine, a medical journal, several scientists wrote articles and editorials
decrying the hyperbole surrounding vitamins and their benefits. They claim that several studies have now
shown that supplemental vitamins, especially in people who are not severely deficient, have little to no health
benefit. Moreover, some studies show actual harm befalling patients who excessively take beta carotene,
vitamin E, and vitamin A. These new findings reiterate the fact that getting one’s nutrients from whole foods is
the best method and parboiling rice allows more people to do just that.

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com
News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com
Cell # 92 321 369 2874
These findings also shed light on another topic that has captivated the rice industry in recent years: genetically
modified rice, or biofortified rice. Golden Rice, especially, has received lots of media attention this year as
protestors in the Philippines uprooted a plot of Golden Rice being grown for experimental research. Golden
Rice was developed specifically to help combat vitamin A deficiencies (VAD) in high-risk nations, places
where supplements are not readily available. Vitamin A deficiency can cause blindness and even death, with
some studies estimating 1-2 million deaths annually are caused by VAD. Golden Rice was specifically
designed to produce beta-carotene in the endosperm of the rice instead of only the plant leaves, where it’s
normally produced. (Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A.) While Golden Rice and GMO rice in general is
controversial, advocates say that for those who simply cannot obtain a balanced diet, it is a much needed
scientific step in the direction.Regardless of how you feel about the Golden Rice or GMO controversy, we are
fortunate to live in a time where we have options such as parboiling, fortifying, and modifying rice, especially
when and where a diverse diet is challenging or impossible.

EU Alleges Up to 30% of Cambodia Rice Imports Mixed With Vietnam Rice
Dec 19, 2013

The Alliance of Rice Producers and Exporters of Cambodia (ARPEC) has proposed a “Code of Conduct” for
rice exporters of the country to prevent contamination of rice from other origins in rice exports to EU member
countries.Under the Everything But Arms (EBA) trade relaxations allowed to Least Developed Countries
(LDCs), the EU does not levy any import tariff on rice from Cambodia (or Myanmar since last summer).
However, this is being exploited by traders from Cambodia to export rice from neighboring Vietnam where
prices are usually low, the EU alleges.According to the EU Trade Commissioner, as much as 30% of the
196,000 tons of rice exported by Cambodia to EU members in 2013 so far is rice of Vietnam origin mixed with
Cambodia rice.
The Commissioner has warned that Cambodia could lose EBA benefits if the government fails to control the
quality of rice exported to the EU members.ARPEC believes the Code of Conduct will help exporters monitor
rice quality. However, ARPEC also says that buyers in the EU should be wary of Cambodian exporters who
promise prices much lower than average Cambodian prices. "The onus also rests upon buyers to be responsible
in this whole game," ARPEC says.Earlier this month, Italy claimed that EU’s rice sector is facing increasing
competition from rice imports from Cambodia and Myanmar. Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, France, and Portugal
agreed with Italy’s claim.

  • 4. Oryza Afternoon Recap – Chicago Rough Rice Futures Look to Recover from Recent Losses, Trade Activity Slows Dec 19, 2013 Chicago rough rice futures for March delivery settled 9 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $15.315 per cwt (about $338 per ton). Rough rice futures retraced a good portion of losses sustained yesterday as selling and spread activity slows ahead of the holidays approaching in the coming weeks. The open interest table shows that as of the close of the market yesterday there are fewer than 2,000 contracts open for January delivery with the majority of the trade already focused on March. Traders expect the bulk of the trade activity to remain focused on moving the remaining nearby contracts forward and thus see underlying support for the January futures. The other grains finished mostly higher today with wheat logging the only loss; soybeans finished the day about 0.4% higher at $13.1900 per bushel; wheat finished about 0.3% lower at $6.1175 per bushel; and corn finished the day about 1.3% higher at $4.3050 per bushel.U.S. stocks erased the bulk of their losses on Thursday, with the Dow industrials extending gains after the prior day's record close, as the energy sector rose along with the price of oil. Wall Street retreating after the prior day's Fed-inspired surge, after existing home sales fell to their lowest level in nearly a year and new claims for jobless benefits climbed last week to a near nine-month high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average cleared losses to turn higher. The S&P 500 was down less than 1 point, with utilities the leading laggard and energy the best performing among its 10 major sectors. The Nasdaq fell. U.S. stock markets are currently trading about 0.1% higher, gold is trading about 3.4% lower, crude oil is seen trading about 1.2% higher, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.6% higher at about 2:00pm Chicago time.Turning to the daily continuation chart of Chicago rough rice futures for March delivery, the market managed to recover nearly half of the losses sustained yesterday. Although buying interest improved the session high of $15.365 per cwt (about $339 per ton) was made overnight, likely caused by the triggering of a stop order on low volume. But with the opening of pit trading this morning the bulls failed to follow through and prices spent the majority of the session trading within 5 cents per cwt (about $1 per ton) of unchanged. Today’s push higher saw prices cross back above the lower Bollinger band which is noted at $15.230 per cwt (about $336 per ton) and now acts as the current price objective. The market remains in bearish territory and the current trend of lower prices remains intact. Today’s trading range is noted as $15.280-$15.405 per cwt (about $337-$340 per ton).Wednesday, there were 2,544 contracts traded, down from 4,167 contracts traded on Tuesday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Wednesday increased by 81 contracts to 7,401. Earlier this month, local sources reported that rice prices increased to around SAR 235 – SAR 290 per 40 kilograms (about $1,566 - $1,930 per ton) which is about 20% - 30% higher than prices in the previous month.Traders say that rice prices have increased due to higher prices quoted by exporting countries. However, local sources claim that rice prices are increasing due to the monopoly of Indian rice traders in the Saudi Arabia rice market. Tags: Saudi Arabia rice prices India Government Considers Increase in Rice Buffer Norms The Indian government may increase buffer norms for rice and wheat in the central pool to ensure availability of food grains in the country for the implementation of the Food Security Act.Today, the Cabinet referred a proposal by the National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research (NCAP) to a panel over a possible increase in buffer norms for rice and wheat by around 50% from the current norm of around 21 - 32 million tons of food grains to meet the requirement under the Food Security Act.It is estimated that India’s food grains requirement under the National Food Security Act will increase to around 62-64 million tons, up from the current 56-60 million tons. The panel includes the Agriculture Minister, the Finance Minister and representatives of the Planning Commission.Local sources say that increasing buffer norms for rice and wheat does not serve any purpose as current stocks are consistently about 100% than the required norms. Moreover, increasing buffer norms will make open sales of food grains difficult which may lead to higher prices and storage losses. Some experts say that increasing buffer norms for rice and wheat may also force the government to import food grains in a low production year or if domestic procurement does not meet the target.India's buffer and strategic reserves were last finalized in April 2005. Strategic rice reserves stand at 2 million tons at any point of the year, while it is 3 million tons for wheat. The peak buffer norm for rice is 12.2 million tons as of April 1, while it is 17.1 million tons for wheat as of July 1. The VFA general secretary told local sources that the average rice export price is about $14.50 per ton lower than last year’s average of around $435 per ton, but exports are likely to decline to around 6.6 million tons in 2013 due to low purchases by Asian countries. Indonesia did not buy any rice from Vietnam this year, while the Philippines and Malaysia have reduced their purchases, he said. However, the VFA is hopeful that rice exports to the Americas and Japan will increase after TPP negotiations. • 8. Thailand Rice Farmers Urged to Increase Efficiency, Rice Yield to Compete Globally Dec 19, 2013 Rice farmers in Thailand should merge rice plots and make use of farm machinery to improve rice yield and reduce production costs, according to the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) and Thailand’s caretaker agriculture minister. The Thai government buys paddy rice from farmers at prices around 40% higher than market prices under the rice mortgage program which started in 2011 to boost farmer income. However, this has led to a sharp decline in rice exports. According to the Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA) President, Thailand has lost export competitiveness in recent years and traditional buyers of Thai rice such as the Philippines and Indonesia have shifted to rivals such as Vietnam due to high prices of Thai rice. The TDRI representative Nipon Poapongsakorn says the rice mortgage program should not be continued as global prices are likely to decline in 2014 and in coming years due to declining rice consumption. Instead, he suggests, Thai rice farmers should improve efficiency to reduce production costs. The caretaker agriculture minister Yukol Limlamthong told local sources that Thai rice faces increasing competition from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos in addition to Vietnam. • 10. in the development of our scientific understanding of vitamins and how they work in the body.In the mid-1800s, a disease called beriberi became frighteningly common. Sufferers had weak arms and legs and found it difficult to walk. Scientists could not figure out what caused it or how to prevent it. During the 1880s one scientist named Christiaan Eijkman began studying chickens with beriberi-like symptoms. He didn’t make much progress until he noticed some of the chickens had mysteriously recovered and were no longer exhibiting symptoms. He figured out that the chickens’ food had changed: they had previously been fed leftover milled military rice and were now being fed civilian brown rice. When Dr. Eijkman’s chickens recovered so quickly from a minor change in diet, he deduced that something in the outer layer of rice prevented beriberi, proving the disease was not the result of blood contamination or temperature variation. Instead, thiamine in the bran and endosperm of rice prevented the development of beriberi. Dr. Eijkman’s work was furthered by Adolphe Vorderman and Casimir Funk, who shortened “vitamin B1 thiamine” to “vital amine,” thus coining the new word “vitamin.”Most nutritionists agree that it’s best to get one’s required vitamins and minerals from a variety of food sources – grains, vegetables, fruits. However, not everyone has the luxury of consuming a diverse diet due to cost or access. Today, consumers don’t have to choose between better nutrients (brown rice) and longer shelf-life (milled rice) because of a process called parboiling. In the 1910s a German-British scientist named Erich Gustav Huzenlaub developed an improved form of parboiling (known as the Huzenlaub Process) that involves vacuum-drying the grains, steaming them, vacuum-drying them again, and then husking them. This method achieved several beneficial results. It preserves more of the nutrients in the rice, making it 80% nutritionally similar to brown rice. Parboiling also extends the grain’s shelf life, making it more resistant to weevils, for example. Finally, it lessens the required cooking time. These last two benefits, the decreased cooking time and weevil-resistance, made parboiled rice the perfect sustenance to air-drop to troops in the field during World War II. During the War, Huzenlaub created a company to produce this parboiled rice and sold all of its production output to the U.S. and British Armed Forces.Parboiled rice, or converted rice as it’s sometimes called, is available in most grocery stores today – in fact, some estimates claim that 50% of global paddy production is parboiled today. It’s especially popular in areas where citizens might have trouble eating a healthy, varied diet due to war, poverty, or political unrest, and is largely the reason beriberi is no longer the endemic disease it once was. The nutritional benefits of parboiled rice are especially interesting given recent studies of the effects of supplemental vitamins and minerals, an industry that has exploded globally in the last decade. In the December 17 edition of Annals of Internal Medicine, a medical journal, several scientists wrote articles and editorials decrying the hyperbole surrounding vitamins and their benefits. They claim that several studies have now shown that supplemental vitamins, especially in people who are not severely deficient, have little to no health benefit. Moreover, some studies show actual harm befalling patients who excessively take beta carotene, vitamin E, and vitamin A. These new findings reiterate the fact that getting one’s nutrients from whole foods is the best method and parboiling rice allows more people to do just that. Golden Rice, especially, has received lots of media attention this year as protestors in the Philippines uprooted a plot of Golden Rice being grown for experimental research. Golden Rice was developed specifically to help combat vitamin A deficiencies (VAD) in high-risk nations, places where supplements are not readily available. Vitamin A deficiency can cause blindness and even death, with some studies estimating 1-2 million deaths annually are caused by VAD. Golden Rice was specifically designed to produce beta-carotene in the endosperm of the rice instead of only the plant leaves, where it’s normally produced. (Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A.) While Golden Rice and GMO rice in general is controversial, advocates say that for those who simply cannot obtain a balanced diet, it is a much needed scientific step in the direction.Regardless of how you feel about the Golden Rice or GMO controversy, we are fortunate to live in a time where we have options such as parboiling, fortifying, and modifying rice, especially when and where a diverse diet is challenging or impossible. However, this is being exploited by traders from Cambodia to export rice from neighboring Vietnam where prices are usually low, the EU alleges.According to the EU Trade Commissioner, as much as 30% of the 196,000 tons of rice exported by Cambodia to EU members in 2013 so far is rice of Vietnam origin mixed with Cambodia rice. The Commissioner has warned that Cambodia could lose EBA benefits if the government fails to control the quality of rice exported to the EU members.ARPEC believes the Code of Conduct will help exporters monitor rice quality. However, ARPEC also says that buyers in the EU should be wary of Cambodian exporters who promise prices much lower than average Cambodian prices. "The onus also rests upon buyers to be responsible in this whole game," ARPEC says.Earlier this month, Italy claimed that EU’s rice sector is facing increasing competition from rice imports from Cambodia and Myanmar. Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, France, and Portugal agreed with Italy’s claim.
