iTEC(Innovative Technologies For An Engaging Classroom) With 27 project partners and funding from theEuropean Commission of 9.45 million Euros, iTEC will provide a model describing how thedeployment of technology in support of innovative teaching and learning activities can movebeyond small scale pilots and become embedded in all Europe’s schools. 1 The key aim is to develop engaging scenarios for learning in the future classroom that canbe validated in a large-scale pilot and besubsequently taken to scale. This will be achieved through an increased understanding of the ways in which new and emergingtechnologies can support more effective forms of learner engagement. 2

Project Objectives To develop and refine a range of teaching and learning scenarios that include new approaches to assessment. To develop decision support criteria (technological, pedagogical and policy related) that facilitates the selection of scenarios. To develop specific teaching and learning activities, also involving new approaches to assessment, based on the scenarios and test these in a prepilot phase with a focus group of teachers, with a view to determining which of these have the potential to be mainstreamed in a number of countries.
Project Objectives To carry out large-scale pilots in up to 1,000 classrooms in at least 12 countries exploring both the integration of technologies and how these impact on teaching and learning practices and the engagement of a wider group of stakeholders outside the school. To researchthe skills and competences needed by teachers in the classroom of the future and to equip teachers and ICT co-ordinators, both within and beyond the project, with the pedagogical knowledge and skills needed to implement project scenarios.
Project Objectives To evaluate the extent to which the iTEC scenarios have been successful in supporting collaboration, individualisation, creativity and expressiveness and identify those with maximum potential to have a transformative effect on the design of the future classroom. Also to identify the underlying change processes necessary to bring about this transformation. To widely disseminate project results and ensure they can be taken to scale by implementing a mainstreaming strategy that includes the formation of a new high-level body at European level to ensure that iTEC scenarios and work in the large-scale pilots contribute to the educational reform process. Including 5 technology focused R&D objectives to support the large scale pilots.
TechnologyFocusedR&D Objectives To select resources (i.e., technologies: tools, learning platforms, services, and plug-ins; content; and people) necessary to carry out the selected learning and teaching scenarios and then to group these resources into meaningful categories (i.e., depending on the way they contribute to the different scenarios) and provide a conceptual framework for describing each of these categories. To describe these selected resources according to the corresponding frameworks and to register them in one or more registries and then to apply a set of specifications and standards (e.g., IMS LTI, OpenID) to the selected resources in order to make them interoperable and easy to combine.
TechnologyFocused R&D Objectives To develop a shell (possibly more than one) that will support the combination of resources in order to provide classrooms with the technical setting necessary to support the teaching and learning activities corresponding to the selected scenarios. To explore conceptual modeling paradigms (e.g., learning design, semanticweb ontologies) to formally describe learning and teaching scenarios. To build a prototype assistant for advising users how to find, select and combine resources that support the project scenarios.
The objective of the technical development in iTEC BuıldingEngagingScenarios Supported By Web 3.0 To provide tools that will overcome barrierstointegratingtheiTEC“environments” (technologies, resources and people)that are part of the mix involved indeveloping engaging activities for the learner in the future classroom.
The iTEC “environments” 1.People 2.Content 3.Tools and services These components above must be: ,[object Object]
Interoperable & customizableTo achieve this, much of the technical exploration in iTEC will build upon progress indevelopments of Web 3.0 including:Widgets, EducationalModelling, Semantic Web languages and tools
WorkPackages WP-1 Project Management Pedagogical scenario development and monitoring WP-2 Learning and teaching scenario development and piloting WP-3 Engaging teachers/learners in the future classroom WP-4 Organisation/support of school pilots and CPD Evaluation of schoolpilots WP-5 Training and supporting teachers in usingand adapting iTECtechnology WP-6 Development of iTEC shells and Composer WP-7 Technicalservices to support learning and teaching Provide mash-up connectors to existing components WP-8 WP-9 Sharingbeyondcontent WP-10 Support for implementing iTEC engaging scenarios MainstreamingsuccessfuliTECScenarios WP-11
WorkPackages WP-1 Project Management Working in close co-operation with WP leaders, the EUNiTEC Project Coordinator and team will continuously coordinate and evaluate the progress of the project and take corrective actions as soon as any difficulty is detected. The Project Coordinator will collect, edit and disseminatetheoutcomestopartnersand associated organisations.
WorkPackages WP-2 Pedagogical scenario development andmonitoring A pedagogical scenario can be understood as narrative descriptions of preferable learning contexts thattake account of user stories, including the resources, tools and services they use, the interactions theyhave, the tasks they encounter and the aims of their activities, set within a description of the modellearning environment.
WorkPackages WP-3 Engaging teachers/learners in the future classroom WP3 will analysethe novel scenarios from WP 2 anduse to create prototypeactivitieswhichwill be used to assess how cutting edge technologies can be deployed ineveryday school use. The pre pilot testingwill involve local implementation with consideration of the baseline/needs of classrooms. WP3 will provide data and feedback on the evaluation of the prototypes (with WP5).
WorkPackages WP-4 Organisation/support of school pilots and CPD WP4 focuses on a large-scale validation of project scenarios (from WP2) that have been developedinto learning and/or assessment activities by WP3.WP4 provides mechanisms to support teachers and national co-ordinators in implementing scenarios; this includes training on iTEC tools and technicalsupport provided by WP6, professional development and a community of practicefor teachers.
WorkPackages WP-5 Evaluation of schoolpilots WP5 is the evaluating the pilots delivered through WP4. The evaluation will start with the production of a knowledge map to record the current context. The second task is to develop evaluation criteria and instruments as well as devising a collaborative approach to documenting the process of operationalising the scenario, through storytelling and dialogue between iTECteachers.
WorkPackages WP-6 Training and supporting teachers in using and adapting iTEC technology WP6 willprovide technical training and support for national technical and pedagogical coordinators who will train iTECenvironments’administrators and users (e.g., teachers) participatinginWP4. WP6 will also supportthe development of the iTEC composer (WP7) by defining technical settings and supporting the customisation of the shell and user interfaces to users requirements.
WorkPackages WP-7 Development of iTEC shells and Composer The shellswill allow the integration of other components of theenvironments. To enable learningadministrators/teachersto use the iTEC environments an iTEC “Composer” will bedeveloped to enable users to assemble shells and theircomponent selection of toolsand services to provide the functionality required for the specific learning and teaching scenario. Thecomposer will also link to directory services to provide access to the required tools andservices
WorkPackages WP-8 Provide mash-up connectors to existing components Integration of tools and services with aparticular focus on the use of the Wookie Widget Server. The proposed extensions to Wookie will help iTECrealise the organisational potential of the computer technology that sits behind electronic whiteboards and learning environments and place it in the hands of teachers and learners in a form which is easily accessible.
WorkPackages WP-9 Sharingbeyondcontent WP9 involvesthe development of a directory service to handle data management and brokerage giving access to descriptions of tools/services, metadata for people (e.g., co-learners, experts, tutors), content, events and other resources such as lesson and assessment plans.
WorkPackages WP-10 Support for implementing iTEC engaging scenarios Semantic modelling will be used in the construction of the iTEC Scenario Development Environment. This component will allow the capture of scenarios created in iTECand allow their expression in lesson and assessment plans.
WorkPackages WP-11 MainstreamingsuccessfuliTECScenarios iTECwill maximise its impact by moving from creatingmeaningful scenarios for the future classroom to testing these in large-scale pilots and finally assessing their viability from a policy making perspective. Mainstreaming of iTEC results will also come from the involvement of a diverse group of Associate Partners from both the public and private sectors.
Conclusion iTEC iTECwill provide a unique opportunity to evaluate relevant state-of-the-art standards and specifications, to assess their usefulness and to suggest improvements. The aim is that iTEC will act as a ‘Living Lab’ for pedagogical and technical innovation involving ICT in schools and allow both public and private sector stakeholders to rethink and test designs for the future classroom. Interoperability between people, tools, events and content is essential to the iTECvision.

  • 10.
  • 11. Interoperable & customizableTo achieve this, much of the technical exploration in iTEC will build upon progress indevelopments of Web 3.0 including:Widgets, EducationalModelling, Semantic Web languages and tools

The Project Coordinator will collect, edit and disseminatetheoutcomestopartnersand associated organisations.
  • 22. WorkPackages WP-10 Support for implementing iTEC engaging scenarios Semantic modelling will be used in the construction of the iTEC Scenario Development Environment. This component will allow the capture of scenarios created in iTECand allow their expression in lesson and assessment plans.
