• Teachers are not adequately trained
• Curriculum/content disconnected with technology
• Assessment not aligned to teacher desktop
• Special funding used to acquire
• Metrics driven by the what (pc/student ratio, connected
  classrooms)
• Fear/Uncertainty/Doubt

                 Generates Questions
How do I use? How do I teach with technology?
                    How do we sustain investment?
                 How do we determine value/impact?
                      How do we connect content?
• How do I deliver personalized, adaptive, immersive
    learning?
• How can I connect with my learners and parents in a
    rich way?
• How can I excite my students with content and projects?
• How can my students leverage content that’s available
    worldwide and in real-time?
• How do I update my school and classroom to reflect
new ways to learn, collaborate, use information?

Technology is a part of the answer.
                     Generates opportunities.

Editor's Notes

  1. Notes:Use this slide mainly as a visual to help set the context for the discussion. Get general agreement that bridging the digital divide has become the overarching goal of many governments and regions in the last decade. On May 17, 2001, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for "a bridge that spans the digital divide". This digital divide at this time separated a few hundred million users of the Internet, most of them located in a small number of "digital-have" countries, from over 5 billion people who are unable to access the wide variety of Internet digital media. There are a number of ways in which governments approach addressing the digital divide, and there are a number of considerations to be taken account of. These include:Social and legal constraints, including censorship and denial of accessEconomic prioritizationBasic infrastructure, including buildings and power sourcesAccess to computer resources or devicesCurriculum and Content(CLICK)If we take away Social and Legal Constraints, and Economic Prioritization out of the conversation for now, what we are talking about is Universal Digital Learning Access – putting the pieces in place to ensure that we can bridge the digital divide and allow our citizens to prosper in the best possible way.Today’s discussion will really be about Universal Digital Learning Access, and I’d like to show you how some of the programs and initiatives sponsored by Microsoft can be of assistance to you along the way. Before I do that however, I’d like to just pause and reflect on Microsoft’s vision for education, and give you an idea of our commitment and passion. (click)

  5. In fact- it’s my pleasure to announce that today, we are launching– the Partners in Learning NETWORK. This evolution of our previous innovative teachers network just went live and is ideal for everyone here. It now serves more than 2 million educators and the new version features advances in social networking technology and allows educators to share ideas, find content and connect and collaborate with their peers from all over the world. It is now available in additional languages and, most importantly, is live today! But enough talk. Now it’s time to show you how, in addition to launching the Partners in learning Network, we are truly delivering on our vision of personalized learning. We are going to take you on a journey through three different classrooms across the globe – each of which will show you different tools and services we have to help empower you, engage your students, provide meaningful communities and even deliver key infrastructure support.
  6. We know you want to create a collaborative, engaging and interactive learning environment for your students. We also know you don’t have a ton of time and sometimes the necessary software and online tools to do this easily. To help teachers engage students in a variety of subject areas – from art to music to science – Microsoft is providing free software and online tools, step-by-step instructions, videos and Getting Startedteacher guides. Beyond learning about access to free tools, the teacher guides will also help teachers get the most out of the software they use every day.Getting started teacher guides, videos and resources available for Free tools, Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010, and Digital Storytelling.Free software downloads and online tools include: AutoCollage, Worldwide Telescope, Photosynth, Songsmith, Photo Story for Windows XP, Office Live Workspace, Windows Live SkyDrive, Bing Search, Bing Maps, Bing Translator.Microsoft has free tools and software to help you bring interactive and fun projects into the classroom. From making a movie in a minute to turning your PC into a virtual telescope or taking a virtual trip to the next country your students study.Getting started teacher guides, videos and instructions will provide educators with classroom examples and lesson ideas along with step-by-step instructions for using Microsoft software and online tools to create a collaborative learning environment.Teacher Technology Tips CampaignFor the next two months, we will be providing daily teacher technology tips, tricks and ideas for the classroom leading up to May 4, 2010, National Teacher Day. For Twitter users, follow @TeachTec or hash tag #TeachTips for daily teacher technology tips. Facebook users can follow Microsoft TeachTec.
  7. We are collaborating with the University of Washington College of Education to help incorporate technology integration into their pre-service teacher program. [NOTE: letter of intent not yet signed, but UW ok with mention of partnership]NCCE will be delivering the Microsoft Institute Teacher Leader Program throughout the Northwest, providing teacher leader opportunities. The contact is NCCE program director, Becky Firth.[NOTE: contact info will be provided in a follow-up email after the event]On e-learning: We are combining in-person teacher leader professional development workshops and building-out new e-learning modules to support both pre-service and in-service teachers. We expect to have our first e-learning module focused on Web 2.0 and Collaboration tools before the end of this school year and this will folded into both the pre-server and in-service teacher leader programs.
  8. Talking points:- The best ways to learn about our latest resources, lesson ideas and new tools for teachers- Starting today, Microsoft TeachTec Twitter will be sending out daily “Tips for Teaching with Technology” from now until Teacher Appreciation Day on May 4th – if you’re not on Twitter, those same Tweets will show-up on Facebook
  9.
