3. Top 10 Reasons for Tweeting
1. Everyone is doing it! Don’t I have to?
2. It seems like fun, and since I’m a bit bored right now, I’ll join!
3. I want to jazz up my marketing.
4. I think social media is the way of the future and I need to understand how it
might apply to my business.
5. I understand you can “connect with customer communities.” I want to do
that. I want to be closer to my customers.
6. I want to use it as a customer service tool.
7. I want to connect with the media.
8. My competitors are all doing it, and I want to understand what they are
doing.
9. I want to monitor what others are saying about me, so I’m not caught by
surprise.
10. I want to use it as means of driving people to my blog, website, or other
clickable content.

4. Setting Goals & Metrics
Who are the leaders in your industry
sector?

5. The Effect…
Think about how Twitter could help you reach your goals:
Improved Customer Satisfaction

What is
Brand monitoring important to your
business?

6. LISTEN BEFORE YOU LEAP….
Top 10 Best Practices
Listen before you leap. Follow competitors, industry
leaders, major customers, targets, analysts, media,
etc…but don’t do it via your main account…
Examine relevant accounts in your market sector.
Who is using Twitter effectively?
Why?
How?
Can you adapt their best practices for your own use?
What are they neglecting?

7. Put your best tweets forward!
Be careful about assigning your “newbies” or “interns” to your
Twitter account. Assign your best brand ambassadors to tweet
conversationally. Think about a separate account for the Founder/
CEO. Use interns to send news feed links via a corporate
account.
Check your @messages at
least 2 – 3x daily, more
around special events, critical
times.
Look at your home page
and review Twitter trending
topics every time you log
in.

8. “Netiquette”
If there are no RTs or @ messages
in your stream, you’re not
practicing good Twitter netiquette.
Engage and be helpful.
Don’t push.
Skip the auto-DMs to new followers,
Skip the auto-follow bots.
Follow back generously.
Don’t buy followers.

9. Jumping In: Almost to the TOP
Consider multiple accounts
carefully. Lots of pros/
cons.
Remember there are lots
of Tweeters on Twitter
because….well, they
don’t know why!!!
Ignore the “social media
experts/pundits” RULES.
Revisit your business goals
as they apply to Twitter.
Are you advancing them?
When all else fails, what
would Grandma say?

15. Tricks of the Trade
1. The power of Twitter is amplified with 3rd party apps (desktop & mobile).
Enabling advance scheduling of tweets, groups, and more. For desktop
use, my fave is hootsuite.
2. Make sure you buy a phone that works well w/Twitter. Test it.
3. When you find your community, you will find their fave memes. Pay
attention to trending topics: #FF, #musicmonday, #wirelesswednesday,
#ecomonday, #waterwednesday, etc.
4. Conference hashtags – you don’t need to be there to jump in!
5. Party! Twitter parties, chats, sitewarmings are hot! #gno
6. Visit What’s the Hashtag?
7. Search.twitter.com is powerful. Visit often.
8. Find your community with hashtags #dc #green #MoCo
9. Twitpic – a picture is worth 140 characters
10. Join the most useful directories: wefollow.com, twibes, twellow
11. Include your twitter handle on business cards, email sig lines, etc.

16. FINDING the TIME…
If you have 5 minutes a day
…you don’t have enough
time to launch a successful
Twitter campaign.
You need at least one hour
per day to manage an
effective Twitter presence;
more at launch.

17. Reassessing
1. Revisit your business goals
and your Twitter goals. What
is happening?
2. How can you fine tune?
3. Be aware that Twitter can be
addictive…make sure you
are reaching your goals,
monitoring and reassessing.
