• Add –ing to the ends of verbs when you want
to explain something that is happening right
now.
• I’m brushing my teeth.
• verb= brush
• I’m reading a book.
• Verb = read

3. The Verb to Be
• Use the verb “to be” before you use the –ing
word.
• I am = I’m We are = We’re
• You are = You’re They are = They’re
• He is = He’s It is = It’s
• She is = She’s

4. • “Leave me alone!” says the cat. “I’m trying to
sleep!”

5. • “Help! I am falling down the staircase!”

6. CVCE Words
• With a CVCE word, (C = consonant, V = vowel)
Drop the “e” and add –ing.
Example:
write writing
love loving
hate hating

7. Add a Consonant
• For other verbs, add another consonant to the
end
• Example:
• stop ----- add another “p” stopping
• run --- add another “n” running
• Swim – add another “m” swimming

8. Complete the sentences. Fill in the gaps with the correct
version of the –ing word

• He is ____________ down. (sit)
• She is ___________ dinner. (eat)
• We are __________ now. (leave)
