Today,a Kansasjudge grantedpermissionto whistleblower
Private Bradley Manning to change his name to Chelsea
ElizabethManning.However,the formerintelligence analyst,
who is currently serving a thirty-five-year prison sentence,
has made clearthat she is not stopping there and that she is
seeking the Army’s approval for her complete gender
transformation. Here’s Luisa Muniz with the story.
“I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female,” was the shocking
statement given last year by Private Manning, formerly
known as Bradley Manning. Today, the first of her many
battles has been won, since she has been granted to
officially change her name to Chelsea Manning.
In an statement released by Manning’s support group
website, she shared:
“Today isan excitingday… I’ve been working for months for
this change, and waiting for years.” [chelseamanning.org]
However, Manning’s biggest goal is to be granted the

that the military is still reluctant to concede.
Manning’s supporters demand that she’d be provided with
health care just like any other prisoner.
In the United States, it is illegal to deny health care to
prisoners.Thatisfairly settled law. Now the Army can claim
this isn't health care, but they have the weight of the
medical profession and science against them. [CBS]
Advocates are also worried about Manning’s well-being
since, according to them, gays and transgender people are
more susceptible to sexual assault and other violence in
prison.
She most likely will need to be placed with a female prison
population because she identifies as female. [Washington
Post]

Manning’s opponents, however, believe that the whole
transgender transformation is just a ploy to get her
transferred to a civilian prison.
He mightbe anglingtogo there because he believes life at a
federal prison could be easier than life at the disciplinary
barracks at Fort Leavenworth, but you enlisted as a male,
you're a male, you're going to be incarcerated as a male.
[CBS]
In spite of her critics, Chelsea Manning is optimistic about
her case. In her own words, she hopes that her case “will
openthe door formany people, bothinside and outside the
military, to request the right to live more open, fulfilled
lives.” [chelseamanning.org]
