• Prevents a single, self-interested party from controlling a
standard
• Lower systems and life cycle costs
• Encourage market competition
• Choose based on functionality desired
• Avoid “lock in” to a proprietary architecture
• Stimulates innovation beyond the standard by
companies that seek to differentiate themselves.
