Be able to communicate
about media production
in discussions
Task 1: Name Ramil G.
Verbal Communication
 Verbal communication is a way of communicating with
another individual through speech, sounds and words this
type of communication is very important when speaking in a
group because it’s the easiest way people can communicate
also if you don’t speak loud and clear your group won’t hear
your idea and it could be a good idea.
Non Verbal Communication
 Non Verbal communication includes sign language, body
language and gestures this type of communication might not
be as important to us as verbal communication but we do use
it in our everyday life like saying hi by waving but it is
important for those people with speech difficulties because
this is one of the only ways that they can communicate with
other people it is also the most used communication by
them.
The Newspaper Tower Challenge: Verbal
 We discussed how we will be doing the tower and how we
were going to fold the newspapers and where we will put the
tapes in like the angle and the size that we would need to
stick the newspaper’s in.
 It was easy because were using the easiest way to
communicate to each other.
 We only had 5 minutes to do this Verbal task.
The Newspaper Tower Challenge:
Nonverbal
 In this task we had 15 minutes to do it but we couldn’t
communicate to each other verbally.
 It was easy because we had more time but it was hard as we
couldn’t talk to each other.
 It was standing but it wasn’t tall enough.
How well it went.
 I think it went well because everyone got through it quietly
without speaking and we didn’t go against the rules.
Good Group Communication Skills
 Environment: if your not in a good environment where there
are noises that distract you in the background you wont get
any work done and it will take longer to explain things.
 Clarity of voice: it is important for you to speak clearly in a
group because if you just whisper an idea you will never know
what people have to say about it and if it’s actually a good
idea.
 Giving people the opportunity to speak and not speaking
over each other is very important because if speak while
someone else is speaking you won’t get to hear that one
possible good idea they have.
Consequences of poor communication skills
 Good ideas will be missed.
 Could cause someone’s job.
 Arguing will ruin the presentation.
 People might get the wrong information because of people
speaking over each other.
Discussion Guide:
 Environment
 if there are people talking in the background you wont be
able to hear good ideas.
 If there are people arguing people will start talking over each
other.
 Supporting Resources
 having supporting resources means that the people involved
in the discussion will be more prepared for what topics might
arise.
Discussion Ground Rules Resources:
 Agenda
 Make sure that the point your getting across is clear and
understandable.
 If you start the discussion unclear in means people will most
likely get sidetracked and the proper reason of the topic will
be missed
 Time
 Make sure that there is enough time to cover all the
necessary points within the discussio.
Discussion Ground Rules:
1. Speak loud and clear.
2. No arguing.
3. Don’t speak over each other.
4. Speak in a calm tone.
5. Be positive.
6. Give people the chance to speak.
7. Put your hand up if you have something to say.
8. Put any devices that will be of any distraction to you and your surroundings.
9. Do not bring food or drinks.
10. Have every possible equipment you will need ready for the discussion.
Interacting with others: The Soler theory
 S: face squarely: by doing this its is showing that the person is involved
with the other individual.
 O: keeping an open posture: this means that you should not cross your
arms or any other negative gestures because it might scare the other
individual away.
 L: lean: people tend to lean forward automatically when talking to
someone so you have to lean to make it look like you’re interested.
 E: eye contact: by keeping a good eye contact it shows the you are
listening to the other person.
 R: be relaxed: being relaxed is important when you are talking to
someone, so stay still and not move about when the other person is
talking to you.
Social Media Group Debate
 1. You must decide upon an opening statement. This
should state your opinion, position and the arguments you
will be proposing.
 E.g. Censorship is wrong because everyone has the right to
free speech.
 Opening statement: I think that social media sites like
Facebook are great because you can communicate easily
with people including the people you love from long
distances even if it’s on the other side of the world also you
can promote your band, product or song within the social
media site.
Questioning Your Opponent
2. You should have at least 10 questions that can be asked of your opponent.
These should be on separate sheets of paper or on note cards for easy reference.
The questions should be specifically directed to your opponent and should be
concise and clear.
• How can you justify getting rid of Facebook when so many people use it to
communicate with their loved ones from long distances?
• How can you justify getting rid of Facebook when so many businesses rely on
it to sell their product’s?
• How can you justify getting rid of Facebook when people use it to promote
their music?
• How can you justify getting rid of Facebook when here are games making
millions like candy rush and Farmville?
• people who use Facebook safely will suffer because of the few people who
don’t, so it would be unfair to get rid of it because of those few other people,
will you still get rid of it?
Answering Debate Questions
3. You should have answers prepared which will be used to respond to your
opponent’s questions. Imagine that you are from the other team and determine
what questions may be asked of your team.
Conclusion
 4. You should have a final conclusive argument/statement drawn
up which will be proposed at the end of your debate.
 When you have determined who will be responsible for each
portion of your team's debate, it is up to you to prepare yourself for
the challenge that lies ahead. Only one team will win this debate.
The winning team will: Have a solid background regarding all
material. Have plenty of evidence to back up claims. Be
creative/psyche out opponents. Outclass opponents/never give an
answer of "uh...."
