Present Simple Tenses Guide
1. PRESENT SIMPLE
A) Usos
El Present Simple (present de indicativo) se utiliza para hablar de:
1 Hábitos y acciones repetidas.
I make lunch every day. Hago la comida cada día.
2 situaciones permanentes.
George and Jenny live in London. George y Jenny viven en Londres.
3 gustos y opiniones.
I think the joke is funny. Creo que el chiste es bueno.
4 hechos y verdades generales.
Chocolate comes from America. El chocolate viene de América.
5 programas (teatro, cine) y horaris (trenes, autobuses, aviones, etc).
The train leaves at 8.00. El tren se va a las 8.00.
B) Expresiones temporals y adverbios de frecuencia.
1 Aquí tienes algunas expresiones temporales que se utilizan co el Present
Simple:
- every day / week / month / year - in the morning / summer / holidays
-cada dia/ semana / mes /año - por la mañana / verano/ vacaciones
- once a day / week / month - on Mondays / Saturday afternoons
- una vez al día / semana / mes - los dilluns / las tardes del sábado
- at night / all the time
- por la noche / todo el tiempo
Jane doesn’t watch TV every day. On Tuesday afternoons we go to the pool.
Jane no ve la TV cada día. Las tardes del jueves vamos a la piscina.
2 Los adverbios de frecuencia van delantes del verbo, pero detrás si se trata del
verbo TO BE. Los más habituales son:
Always siempre usually normalmente often a menudo sometimes a veces
Rarely poques veces never nunca

I study English every day.

Estructura:
Afirmativa: Sujeto + verbo en presente + …
(-s/-es 3ª per. singular)
3ªper.sing.: She plays tennis every day
You play tennis every day
Interrogativa: Aux. DO/DOES+ sujeto + verb + … ?
(3ªp.sing) (infinitivo)
3ªper.sing.: Does she play tennis?
Do you play tennis?
Negativa: Sujeto + DO/DOES NOT + verbo + …
(infinitivo)
3ªper.sing.: She doesn’t play tennis.
You don’t play tennis.
3. Afirmativa – Es el verbo en la forma base, pero la 3a persona del singular (he, she, it)
acaba en –s.

Reglas ortográficas pera la 3a persona del singular
1 Los verbos que acaban en –ss, -ch, -sh, -x y –o le añadimos las letras –es.
Kiss kisses teach teaches brush brushes fix fixes go goes
Besar enseñar cepillar sujetar ir
2 A los que acaban en consonant +y le cambiamos la y por una i y le añadimos
–es.

3 Pero si acaban en vocal +y, sólo le añadimos una –s.
say says
Nota: El verbo have cambia a has en la 3a persona del singular.
Negativa – Am I, we, you y they escribimos do not o don’t delante del verbo, y con he,
she y it utilizamos does not o doesn’t (y el verbo SIN –s).
I don’t eat meat Anne doesn’t eat meat
No como carne Anne no come carne.
Interrogativa – Escribimos do delante del sujeto si se trata de I, we, you o they, però si
es la 3a persona del singular hacemos servir does (y el verbo SIN –s)
Do you play tennis? Does your sister drive?
¿Juegas a tenis? ¿Tu hermana conduce?
Respuestas cortas “Short answers”
Do you eat fish? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
¿Comes pescado? Sí, como / No, no como
Does Anne like chocolate? Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.
¿Le gusta a Anne el chocolate? Sí, le gusta. / No, no le gusta.
