5 Myths about Drug Abuse and Addiction
5 myths about drug abuse and addiction
5 myths about drug abuse and addiction
Tracie Heisler
Medical marijuana was made legal in Florida through a progression of laws starting with the enactment of the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014 and its subsequent amendments, the most recent being Amendment 2 that came into effect in January 2017. This, however, does not mean anyone in the state can possess or use marijuana. Even those qualified to use medical marijuana face certain restrictions. Florida’s laws currently allow patients facing debilitating medical conditions to use marijuana, provided they have a doctor’s recommendation. Debilitating medical conditions include cancer, epilepsy, Crohn’s disease, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. Not just any doctor can prescribe medical cannabis. They must be certified by the state to prescribe marijuana after undertaking training and examination. Furthermore, the patient must meet certain additional qualifications before receiving a prescription. For example, they must have tried other treatments before that did not work. They must be registered in the Compassionate Use Registry. If they are below age 18, a second physician must consent to their use of medical marijuana.

Many people don't understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. They may mistakenly think that those who use drugs lack moral principles or willpower and that they could stop their drug use simply by choosing to. In reality, drug addiction is a complex disease, and quitting usually takes more than good intentions or a strong will. Drugs change the brain in ways that make quitting hard, even for those who want to. Fortunately, researchers know more than ever about how drugs affect the brain and have found treatments that can help people recover from drug addiction and lead productive lives.

Addiction results when a person ingests a substance (alcohol, cocaine, or nicotine, for example) or repeatedly takes part in an activity (gambling) that can be pleasurable, but the continued use of which becomes compulsive and interferes with everyday life. Common addictions include: -- Alcohol abuse -- Drug abuse -- Exercise abuse -- Pornography -- Gambling Classic symptoms of addiction include impaired control over substances/behavior, preoccupation with substance/behavior, continued use despite consequences, and denial. Behavior patterns and habits associated with addiction are commonly characterized by the pursuit of immediate gratification, coupled with negative long-term effects. Physiological dependence results when the body is unable to function normally in the absence of the substance or behavior. This state produces the conditions of tolerance and withdrawl. Tolerance is the result of the body requiring larger volumes of the substance or stimulus in order to achieve the original effects. Withdrawal is the physical and psychological symptoms experienced when the body no longer receives the substance in the same quantities it has become reliant upon.
