Patterns of Distribution in
         towns.
                   Key Ideas

Towns and other nucleated settlements are
           distributed throughout the country in
different patterns. There are many reasons
                          for this.
            Can you think of some???
Today we are going to look at the historical and social
factors of the distribution of towns.
Historic factors:

Vikings towns:

    Great sea traders

Settled along the east and south coasts of Ireland

Many of these early settlements developed into towns

They now form a linear pattern along or near the coast

Historic factors:

Norman towns:

    In the East and South

    On fertile land

    Near rivers

    Defensive sites

Social factors
The primacy of Dublin:

Dublin is Ireland's primate city. (Does anyone know what this
    means?)

    Dominates political and economic life.

Dublin has affected the distribution of settlement in 2
  ways:

Some towns have developed in a cluster (nucleated pattern)
    around Dublin

Some towns developed on the roads to Dublin in a
____________ pattern. (Can someone fill in the type?)
