Lewis and Clark were appointed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803 to lead an expedition to explore the vast Louisiana Purchase territory acquired from France. In May 1804, Lewis and Clark departed on their journey west with a Corps of Discovery to map the new lands and seek a water route to the Pacific Ocean.
