2. •A fairly common immune disorder in the United
States, rheumatoid arthritis develops when the
lining of the joint membranes comes under attack
by the body’s own immune system. The attack
results in significant inflammation, which can
cause damage to the cartilage and bones
contained within the joint. Over time, the joint
falls out of alignment and begins to lose its
shape.
3. •Researchers have not yet identified a singular
precursor for the disorder. However, several risk
factors have been strongly linked to its
development. As a general rule, women are
considerably more likely to develop rheumatoid
arthritis than men. Furthermore, although the
disease can occur at any age, most patients
began developing rheumatoid arthritis between
the ages of 40 and 60. As with many other
disorders, individuals with a family history of
rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to develop it.
