A simple blood test that identifies changes in zinc in the body
could make it possible to diagnose breast cancer early, according
to researchers at the University of Oxford. The researchers said
that changes in the isotopic composition of zinc in the breast
tissue may enable the identification of a “biomarker,” or
measurable indicator, of early breast cancer that could result in
faster treatment.

Diagnosis
In an effort to develop a better understanding of how the body
processes zinc, scientists used methods generally applied to the
analysis of trace metal isotopes for the study of planetary
formation and climate change.Through an examination of zinc in
the blood of 10 test subjects, which included five patients with
breast cancer and five healthy individuals, the researchers found
alterations in zinc resulting from the fact that cancer changes the
way in which cells handle the metal.

The researchers said that it is widely known that cancerous breast
tumors contain high levels of zinc. However , the molecular
mechanisms that caused it were unknown. The new findings could
aid the creation of new advanced treatments and medical devices
for cancer.
