Triathlete Lawyer Runs for Justice at Marin Human Race

“We run for justice, not from it” is the slogan of the 14 volunteers who will run in the
Marin Human Race to raise funds for Legal Aid of Marin. Maura Prendiville, a staff
attorney at Legal Aid and the organization’s lead runner, raised $2,000 through her
network of colleagues last year but is working on clearing more than $5,000 for the
agency from this year’s race.

The 28th Annual Marin Human Race takes place Saturday, May 8 at the Marin Center
Fairgrounds in San Rafael, with registration beginning at 7 a.m. The 5K race begins at
8:30 a.m. Organized by the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin, the
race is the largest collaborative fundraiser in the county. Last year the Center returned
over $350,000 to the community for the benefit of 115 nonprofits and schools. The public
is invited to join in the fun. Events include a pancake breakfast, over a dozen bands and
performing groups, kid’s races, and more.

Before and during the race, visitors are encouraged to come by Legal Aid of Marin’s
community booth to get to know Maura Prendiville and other team members and find out
about Legal Aid’s programs such as Marin Opportunity Centers and Marin Helpers.

Legal Aid of Marin is a non-profit organization that provides high quality civil legal
representation and advocacy, information, referrals, advice, community education, and
other assistance to low income and older adult residents of Marin County. For more
information about Legal Aid of Marin, or to donate to the Marin Human Race on behalf
of Legal Aid of Marin, call 415-492-0230 ext. 314 or email leldar@legalaidmarin.org.

About Maura Prendiville
Prendiville has been a staff attorney at Legal Aid since December 2008. She graduated
from UC Santa Cruz with a BA in Community Studies and a minor in Legal Studies. As a
student, she spent six months on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua, where she worked with
a human rights lawyer who defended the land rights of local indigenous communities.
After college, she worked at a small consumer law firm in San Francisco, and spent her
free time traveling abroad and tutoring ESL students.

Prendiville has enjoyed long-distance running for many years. She has completed
numerous half-marathons, long-distance trail runs, and one marathon. More recently, she
expanded her athletic interests to include bicycling and swimming, and recently
completed her second Olympic-distance triathlon. She occasionally commutes to Legal
Aid from San Francisco on her bike.

At Boalt Hall School of Law, she was active in the Berkeley Law Foundation, the East
Bay Community Law Center, and interned at the United Farm Workers in Watsonville
and the Opportunity Agenda in New York. After graduating, she spent one year in
Curitiba, Brazil, where she worked at a human rights organization which defended the
rights of small farmers and landless peasants.

She is passionate about her work and says that she joined Legal Aid of Marin “to give
back to the community in which I grew up.”
