Learning communities are widely
accepted as a high impact practice (Kuh,
2008). Research suggests that learning
communities are positively related to
educational gains, though indirectly
through student engagement (Inkelas et
al. 2007; Pike, 1999; Pike et al. 2008;
Rocconi, 2010; Zhao and Kuh, 2004). It
is the structure of learning communities,
then, that is important to consider in
fostering student success and retention.

  • 47. Learning communities are widely accepted as a high impact practice (Kuh, 2008). Research suggests that learning communities are positively related to educational gains, though indirectly through student engagement (Inkelas et al. 2007; Pike, 1999; Pike et al. 2008; Rocconi, 2010; Zhao and Kuh, 2004). It is the structure of learning communities, then, that is important to consider in fostering student success and retention. 47
