What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is an exciting medical procedure which corrects the effects of
the sun, wind and time.
What is LASER?
Laser stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers
work by producing an intense beam of light energy that travels in one direction. The
laser beam can gently vaporize and remove wrinkles, scars and blemishes, seal blood
vessels or cut skin tissue.
The laser has the unique ability to produce one specific color (wavelength) of light
which can be varied in its intensity and pulse duration. The newest laser systems have
become remarkably precise and selective, allowing treatment results and safety levels
not previously available.
Physicians around the world use the pinpoint accuracy of advanced CO2 lasers
(carbon dioxide) and erbium lasers to repair damaged skin. Laser skin resurfacing
reduces wrinkles without scalpels or stitches. The laser emits an intense beam of
energy that heats and vaporizes tissue instantaneously. It is so precise that the normal
surrounding tissue is not affected.
What lasers are used for laser skin resurfacing?
The primary lasers used for laser skin resurfacing are the new generation ultra pulsed
type CO2 lasers and the erbium lasers.
History and Background
Ablative laser resurfacing with pulsed CO2 or erbium:YAG lasers has long been the
gold standard for the treatment of photoaged skin. However the prolonged( up to 3
weeks) postoperative recovery period and the potential for adverse effects limit the
applicability of these ablative laser systems. Non-ablative laser technologies spare the
epidermis and selectively heat the dermis, leading to collagen synthesis and
remodeling without protracted healing. However, the non-ablative lasers do not yield
the same degree of clinical results. Similar to non-ablative lasers, fractional laser
devices emit infrared light that is absorbed by water-containing tissue with limited
postoperative recuperation. With repeated treatments fractional resurfacing can yield
favorable clinical results. Fractional laser devices produce microscopic threedimensional arrays of thermal injury to dermal collagen surrounded by a zone of intact skin. Because the stratum corneum is spared, migration of keratinocytes ensues
with rapid healing with little apparent wounding of the skin.

Technology

The device is approved for improvement of facial rhytides, atrophic scarring,
pigmentary dyschromias, and soft tissue coagulation.

How Does the DermaXel work?
The laser provides unique fractional skin resurfacing technology combined with the CO2
HH˕˞˛ >E mode (10.6µm wavelength) for advanced ablative and non-ablative procedures.
The Laser utilizes SubPixel technology which allows controlling the pixel size, pixel density,
and the level of heating in the pixel columns resulting in enhanced clinical results. In contrast
to the old carbon dioxide lasers, the newest generation of DermaXel CO2 laser, delivers short
bursts of extremely high-energy laser light. This vaporizes the undesired skin tissue, one layer
at a time. The laser's highly focused beam of energy enables the doctor to gently remove the
skin's surface with a very low risk of scarring and complications in properly selected patients.
This energy heats water within the surface layers of the skin, causing both the water and the
tissue of the skin to turn to vapor. Every time the laser passes over the skin, some of the
outermost layers of the skin are removed in a precise and controlled way to the appropriate
depth. The skin then heals over a period of time, as new layers of collagen are produced. The
skin can literally resurface itself, causing an improvement in the appearance of sun damaged,
wrinkles, acne, and scarred skin.

Benefits of DermaXel:
Immediate skin tightening
Improve skin laxity and texture
Erase unwanted brown spots
Smooth wrinkles and acne scars
Rejuvenate neck, chest and hands
Smooth scars and certain stretch marks
