2. • New vacancies in 2012 have been occurring in surges.
• Surprisingly the first quarter of the year saw the most activity, with the normal autumn surge yet to appear.
• The lull in June is also uncharacteristic, although this can potentially be attributed to the Jubilee celebrations.
• Overall though 2012 has seen greater vacancy activity than 2011.
3. • Chart 1 shows the volume of investment banking roles in 2012 by week, Chart 2 shows the volume of legal
roles in law firms specializing in banking in 2012 by week.
• Legal vacancies for banking lawyers has been quiet though out 2012, other than a temporary spike in may.
• We can see the correlation between the investment banks spiking in vacancies in may and the law firms for

• With Investment Banks culling, there is little reason to suggest aggressive hiring going into Q1 2013.
• Which practice areas will take up the slack given the lull, or is the legal sector overall going to slump?

corporate roles.
• Overall vacancies are proving more even with vacancy growth for Real Estate, TMT and Employment Lawyers.
