2. The Detroit Designated Market Area (DMA) :
• Total 2011 population: 4,821,460
• The Detroit DMA stretches from the Ohio border, northward to the
Saginaw peninsula.
• The majority of the 4.8 million Detroit DMA population is non-
Hispanic white, however there are over one million African-
American residents centered around the downtown areas.
• The Detroit DMA’s economy declined in the 1980’s and 90’s due to its
heavy reliance of the domestic automobile industry. However, much
has reversed in the past 15 years with renewed demands.

3. The racial and ethnic mix of the Detroit DMA:
• The Detroit DMA has had 35% increases in both the Latino and
Asian populations since 2000, while both white and black non-
Hispanics have decreased slightly.
• The majority of Hispanic growth comes from native-born children,
rather than immigration. Among the Hispanic population, more
than three-quarters claim Mexico heritage, with another 7.6%
hailing from Puerto Rico.
• There is also a vibrant Arab population, specifically Lebanese.
Although the Detroit DMA ranks as 13th in overall population, it
ranks 3rd in Arab population.
