6. COSTAL COMMUNITIES
September 3–9, 2012
Along the rocky shores and sandy
beaches of Hawai’i lie some of the
most stubborn plants – tolerant of
harsh growing conditions. These
areas are also home to colorful
coral reefs, the mating grounds of
humpback whales, and one of two
native Hawaiian mammals – the
monk seal.
In addition to the natural world, each
island has its special coastal
locales, from a historic colony once
home to a Catholic saint and a
community stricken with a
debilitating illness to a wildlife
preserve saving nesting grounds for
endangered birds.
Racers will discover there is more to
the beach than surfing and
sunbathing.
7. LOWLAND DRY AND
MESIC FOREST
September 10–16, 2012
From the state tree, the tangled
kuiki, to the native hoary bat, the
lowland forests are present on
nearly every island. These forests,
known as kula, are hotspots for
ecological preservation and
conservation efforts with many
endangered plant and animal
species.
The trees in this area were critical to
ancient Hawaiians with the lama
tree, considered sacred to Laka, the
goddess of the hula, used as posts
in the construction of homes and the
wilwili used for boats and
surfboards. In many places, this
natural ecosystem gave way to
sugar plantations and other
agriculture.
8. WET FOREST AND
WOODLAND
September 17–23, 2012
Known as wao akua the wet forests
of Hawai’i were reserved for the
gods. And even after the arrival of
Captain Cook in 1778, these lands
were relatively untouched.
Today they are the lush and colorful
home to diverse species of colorful
native birds, trees, ferns and other
plants. While these areas may
appear isolated and protected, they
are often vulnerable to invasion by
alien plants.
Throughout the event, racers will
learn more about the ways they can
protect the ecosystems in which
they travel.
9. ALPINE DESERT
September 24–30, 2012
Harsh, barren, cold and hostile –
many would assume the summits of
Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and
Haleakala to be lifeless. But the
silversword, found only on those
peaks, reminds us that life finds a
way, as it grows in volcanic cinder.
The sheer enormity of the dormant
volcanoes in this ecosystem
demonstrate the power of nature as
it brings to mind the creation story of
the islands themselves and their
birth in fire.
As the racers reach the end of their
journey here, they’ll find confidence,
knowing they have taken their first
steps on the way to greater
wellbeing.
11. HAWAIIAN CULTURE
Ancient Hawaiian myths revere four
tiki gods, Kanaloa, the god of the
sea; Ku, the god of war; Lono, the
god of fertility and peace; and Kane
the god of light and life. As racers
participate in the Eco-Challenge and
are immersed in the ecosystems,
they’ll be introduced to Hawaiian
mysticism, traditions and lore. We’ll
explore the impact this history has
on modern Hawaiians and their
sense of ‘aina, or respect and care
for the land and sea.
12. ENDANGERED SPECIES
Hawaii is the extinction capital of the
world, with 75 percent of the U.S.’s
known extinctions occurring on the
islands. Most of these extinctions,
and the current endangered
species, are the result of human
intervention and the introduction of
alien plant and animal species.
Before these plants and animals
disappear, racers will be introduced
to the Hawaiian monk seal, the
hoary bat, the green sea turtles and
the Hawaiian goose and other birds,
as they virtually travel through the
diversity of Hawai’i and learn how
they can help save a species.
