PPC Advertising: What is it and why
do you need it?
For those who are just starting out with their
online business, you may have heard of PPC
or pay per click advertising, but you may not
fully understand what it does. PPC
advertising is one of the most popular types
of advertising on the internet. Understanding
what PPC is and what it does and how it can
work for your business can go a long way
towards building your online business.
What is PPC Advertising?
Also known as search engine marketing, pay
per click advertising is what you see on the top
and right side of your screen on a search
engine results page. Essentially, these ads will
appear on a search result screen when the
appropriate keywords are typed in for the
query.
When someone clicks on one of the ads on
the results screen, it takes them to a landing
page that offers them the information they
requested on the search engine.
You will only pay for the ad
each time it is “clicked” or
accessed. Generally speaking,
the charge for each click is
quite low since the percentage
of those who actually purchase
the product or service is but a
fraction of those who actually
click on the advert. Also, PPC
ads can appear on advertising
networks and different websites
all around the internet.
How does PPC Advertising work for my Online
Business?
Essentially, by placing ads in this manner, you
can reach a wide range of people that you
otherwise would probably miss. PPC ads enjoy
some advantages over other, popular methods of
marketing on the internet such as search engine
optimization (SEO). For example, PPC ads
appear much more quickly and prominently than
generated search results as part of the SEO
strategy.
However, PPC ads cost money when they are
used and that cost can build up quickly. Many
experts believe that the best use of PPC is in
balance with SEO and combine these efforts to
get the most tangible results.
Is PPC Advertising the Solution for
my Online Business Marketing?
While it is not the “end all, be all”
for online marketing, it is an
important part of the overall
strategy to generate more web
traffic to your online business. The
most effective PPC advertising
campaigns are generally run in
balance with SEO and other efforts
in order to maximize the coverage
area.
Depending on the nature of the online
business, PPC can either be the prominent or
the subordinate strategy. This can be
augmented by building attractive, salesenticing landing pages as the place where
PPC ads send potential customers in order to
reduce the “bounce” or in other words,
increase the percentage of people actually
making a purchase from the total amount who
visit the page.
Another variable is the profit margin of the
products or services that you are offering.
In essence, the larger the profit margin, the
greater the use of PPC advertising as fewer
sales can offset the cost of paying for each
“click”.
