Our Rights As Children
By Aditi Naik and Saira Simon
What is this event about?
This is an event where we, the students of The
Winchester School stand in support with face to
faith in solidariTEA to remember those children
whose rights have and are still being violated.
This event brings together people of different
faiths and beliefs to discuss issues pertaining to
children's rights.
What are Children's rights?
• In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special
document just for them because people under 18 years old
often need special care and protection that adults do not.
• The result is the Convention on the Rights of the Child. A
'convention' is an instrument in international law, and the CRC
is the first legally binding agreement to spell out the rights of
all children.
What is the importance of Children's
rights?
Right through history, children have been abused and exploited. They
suffer from hunger and homelessness, work in life-threatening
conditions, have deficient health care and limited opportunities for
basic education. A child does NOT deserve to live such a deprived life.
Childhood can and must be preserved. Children have the right to
survive, develop, be protected and participate in decisions that
impact their lives.
So come stand with us , and help
us to support those children who
are being neglected. Every child
matters and help us give them a
life they are rightful of.
Activity 1
Memorising Your Rights
You will have 3 minutes to remember 10 rights
10 Children’s Rights
• No child should be treated unfairly on any
basis.
• Children have the right to an education.
• Children have the right to live.
• Children have the right to an identity.
• No child should be neglected, abused or
exploited.
10 Children’s Rights
• Children have the right to relax and play.
• Children have the right to meet together and
join groups and organisations.
• Children have the right to get information
that is important to their health and well-
being.
• Children have the right to be cared for by
their parents.
• Children have the right to privacy.
Activity 2
Recognizing Your Rights
You will be asked questions based on the children’s
rights poster on each table.
Why is the Convention
of the Rights of the
Child necessary?
Question 1
Question 2
How does the Convention
define a 'child'?
What is
considered as
child abuse?
Question 2
How can a child
'be aware, be
safe' ?
Question 3
Which one is the most
important children’s
right to you?
Question 4
Summarize
children’s rights
Question 5
Tell us something
new you have
learned from this
activity.
Question 6
Activity 3
Rank Your Rights
Rank these rights from most important to least
important. Students will then explain and justify
why they ranked each right as they did.
Activity 4
Children's Rights Violations
Students will discuss in pairs- ‘situations that you
have heard of where children’s rights have
been violated’
Rights violations that young people live
with around the world
The United Nations Secretary-General’s Study on Violence Against Children
(2006) reported on violence in a number of settings, including:
Home and family –
For many children around the world, home is not a safe place because of harsh physical
punishment and treatment; emotional violence including insults, name-calling, threats,
isolation and rejection; neglect; sexual violence; early marriage; harmful traditional
customs; and witnessing domestic violence.
Schools and educational settings –
In many countries, physical punishment and cruel treatment by teachers is a routine
part of school life. Girls may be harassed verbally, abused or raped at school or on their
way there. Bullying between children can be a serious problem. Global studies found
that between 20 and 60 per cent of children reported that they had been bullied at
school in the past month.
Orphanages, children’s homes and other institutions –
There are eight million children around the world who live away from their families.
Children in this situation may face neglect and violence from staff and from other
children.
Community –
Communities such as villages, neighbourhoods, streets or groups should be places
where children feel protected and supported. However, often they can be places
where young people face risks from trafficking and kidnapping, violence from other
children. Children may also be exposed to violence through the media and the
Internet.
Rights violations that young people live
with around the world
Activity 5
Know Your Responsibilities
Each group will receive one right. Using this they
will brainstorm responsibilities that come with
this right.
Rights
• My responsibility in ensuring the right to life
• My responsibility in ensuring the right to education
• My responsibility in ensuring the right to family or parental
care
• My responsibility in ensuring the right to live in a safe
environment
• My responsibility in ensuring the right to freedom of
religion, belief and opinion
Thank you!
So let us share the richness and be
proud of our faith, culture and
tradition, join hands in SolidariTEA!

Solidaritea Event Presentation

  • 1. Our Rights As Children By Aditi Naik and Saira Simon
  • 2. What is this event about? This is an event where we, the students of The Winchester School stand in support with face to faith in solidariTEA to remember those children whose rights have and are still being violated. This event brings together people of different faiths and beliefs to discuss issues pertaining to children's rights.
  • 3. What are Children's rights? • In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special document just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not. • The result is the Convention on the Rights of the Child. A 'convention' is an instrument in international law, and the CRC is the first legally binding agreement to spell out the rights of all children.
  • 4. What is the importance of Children's rights? Right through history, children have been abused and exploited. They suffer from hunger and homelessness, work in life-threatening conditions, have deficient health care and limited opportunities for basic education. A child does NOT deserve to live such a deprived life. Childhood can and must be preserved. Children have the right to survive, develop, be protected and participate in decisions that impact their lives.
  • 5. So come stand with us , and help us to support those children who are being neglected. Every child matters and help us give them a life they are rightful of.
  • 6.
  • 7. Activity 1 Memorising Your Rights You will have 3 minutes to remember 10 rights
  • 8. 10 Children’s Rights • No child should be treated unfairly on any basis. • Children have the right to an education. • Children have the right to live. • Children have the right to an identity. • No child should be neglected, abused or exploited.
  • 9. 10 Children’s Rights • Children have the right to relax and play. • Children have the right to meet together and join groups and organisations. • Children have the right to get information that is important to their health and well- being. • Children have the right to be cared for by their parents. • Children have the right to privacy.
  • 10. Activity 2 Recognizing Your Rights You will be asked questions based on the children’s rights poster on each table.
  • 11.
  • 12. Why is the Convention of the Rights of the Child necessary? Question 1
  • 13. Question 2 How does the Convention define a 'child'?
  • 14. What is considered as child abuse? Question 2
  • 15. How can a child 'be aware, be safe' ? Question 3
  • 16. Which one is the most important children’s right to you? Question 4
  • 18. Tell us something new you have learned from this activity. Question 6
  • 19. Activity 3 Rank Your Rights Rank these rights from most important to least important. Students will then explain and justify why they ranked each right as they did.
  • 20.
  • 21.
  • 22. Activity 4 Children's Rights Violations Students will discuss in pairs- ‘situations that you have heard of where children’s rights have been violated’
  • 23. Rights violations that young people live with around the world The United Nations Secretary-General’s Study on Violence Against Children (2006) reported on violence in a number of settings, including: Home and family – For many children around the world, home is not a safe place because of harsh physical punishment and treatment; emotional violence including insults, name-calling, threats, isolation and rejection; neglect; sexual violence; early marriage; harmful traditional customs; and witnessing domestic violence. Schools and educational settings – In many countries, physical punishment and cruel treatment by teachers is a routine part of school life. Girls may be harassed verbally, abused or raped at school or on their way there. Bullying between children can be a serious problem. Global studies found that between 20 and 60 per cent of children reported that they had been bullied at school in the past month.
