Your Front-Row Seat to Exploration Awaits this Spring at National Geographic

1. From the Director’s Desk
This time of year has a ‘back to the future’ feel about it. We’ve just launched
the new calendar year of exhibitions and events at EGAG, and already the end
of the Financial Year is looming. While the Management Committee looked to the
future in a recent strategic planning meeting, gallery staff have begun to review
activities and collate information from the past Financial Year.
Seen in the Light, a two-part regional project scheduled for May, is well under-
way after successful application to East Gippsland Shire Council Arts Alliance
and Heritage Grant provided funding. Seen in the Light (light in a box) involves
a group of 30 artists and Seen in the Light (light graffiti), invites community and
school groups to have fun drawing with light (torch, light saber, anything that
emits light) and capture the image on their camera or phone. Visit EGAG’s web-
site for details.
Linden Dean’s participation last year in the 43rd International Naïve Artists Camp
in Trebnje, Slovenia, has provided EGAG with an exciting opportunity to feature
an international artist. Slovenian naïve artist Samo Jurecic has been invited to visit
Bairnsdale. If all goes well, Samo may be showing his work here at EGAG in 2012.
Please note that the Floral Sculpture Exhibition previously advertised for March
was postponed by the artist. We will advise a new date for 2012 when confirmed.
The exhibition Around the Edge with FOGL has been nominated by Friends of
the Gippsland Lakes, Parks and Reserves (FOGL) for consideration in the Victo-
rian Coastal Awards for Excellence. These awards celebrate and recognise the
great work people, groups, businesses, schools and governments do to protect
Victoria’s magnificent coastal and marine environments. As the initiating organi-
sation for this exhibition, EGAG hopes the project gets recognition for highlighting
a major regional asset and the essential role organisations such as FOGL fulfill.
Entries are arriving in the mail every day from as far afield as Germany and
France, and others closer to home in NSW and ACT for EGAG’s second Book
Award, Books . . . Beyond Words - Evolution. It’s early days yet, but it appears the
success of the inaugural exhibition is paying dividends and we’re leading the
charge for internationally recognised arts events in East Gippsland.

ceptual boundaries. Major Award $5,000 ; Innovation Award $1,000; Acquisitive
Award for an East Gippsland Artist $1,000; People’s Choice Award $500. Entries

Light Graffiti. Join in the ‘light’ celebrations for Creative Gippsland’s month of
May by ‘drawing with light’ and capturing the image on your camera. Selected
images will be printed and displayed at East Gippsland Art Gallery and posted on
EGAG’s website. Rolling entries continue througout the exhibition until May 13. For
info on how to participate go to: www.eastgippslandartgallery.org.au
While the film night in January is covered in a separate report by organiser
Kerri Easton, I would like to congratulate Kerri, and all helpers, on a successful
fundraising event.
The gallery is looking good with new carpet in the foyer; unfortunately, the
laying of it coincided with the workday organised to clean and refurbish the gal-
lery. We hope to have an alternative maintenance day later in the year.
The journals for Digressions Detours & Sidetracks are indeed travelling around,
with artists in the area showing lots of interest in contributing. It will be interesting
to see the journals when the project finishes in a couple of years.
A steady trickle of vouchers from Lucke’s Fresh Food Market are beginning
to arrive, so thanks to all who are supporting us this way. If you shop at Lucke’s,
please pick up a loyalty tag from EGAG reception; it costs you no more than
what you usually spend, but EGAG receives reward vouchers which ultimately
helps the budget spread further.
To ensure you don’t miss out on invitations, special offers or last minute updates.
remember to keep the gallery updated with your current email address. Send
any changes to your email address to admin@eastgippslandartgallery.org.au
-Margaret Lomas, Chairperson, Friends of EGAG
East Gippsland Art Gallery’s calendar for January to June 2011 forecasts an
exciting and varied display of works by artists from this area and further afield. All
these exhibitions are complemented by the involvement of volunteers. Some of
the opening nights will be catered for and served by volunteers. Saturday view-
ing of exhibitions is made possible with volunteer gallery attendants.
During the Director’s leave in March, additional volunteer hours were required
to cover openings, artist talks and reception/gallery attendant tasks. We
acknowledge the volunteers who offered to help for extra sessions.
Any ‘Friend’, whether new or longstanding, who has some time to volunteer
at the gallery would be most welcome and appreciated. Please request a vol-
unteer registration form at reception to indicate your areas of interest. We also
welcome suggestions for areas of volunteering which you may have skills in and
would like to share with a not-for-profit organisation.
2010 concluded with an enjoyable and friendly day at the “Volunteers Thank
You” event. 2011 began with a positive and well-supported Orientation Day in
February, when volunteer roles at the gallery were explained and discussed. This
information concluded with a sociable interactive time over morning tea.
A range of activities, planned with a different focus, will occur throughout 2011
– all art related! Watch for information regarding these activities. To ensure you
continue to receive information about these events, please notify EGAG if you
have changed your postal or email address.

3. Summer Feast of Film
EGAG’s Summer Feast of Film was a
sellout success. It was standing room
only when the lights went down on
January 15 to view “The Best of Briago-
long” along with finalists from the 2009
Newtown Flicks film festival.
Many individuals assisted in a range
of ways, from contributions of time
and skills, to loaning equipment, dis-
tributing posters, and the provision of
items for a much appreciated supper.
The evening would not have been as
enjoyable as it was without the assist-
ance of each and every one of those
helping hands. Because of those
efforts, the Friends raised just over $600,
which will be used to support the 2011
Artists Book Award and directly sustain
EGAGs reputation for excellence.
Audience surveys indicate that
another night would be well received,
so keep your eyes peeled for the next
Summer Feast of Film in January 2012.

Exhibitions
Fine Art for Fine Presents offered a
wonderful selection for those seeking
special Christmas gifts. Chanticleer’s
performance ensured the opening
took on a festive atmosphere. Rolling
into Summer Showcase, this exhibition
again highlighted to tourists the diver-
sity and quality of art produced in East
Gippsland.
Joe Driscoll’s self-titled exhibition
drew a large crowd to the opening.
His paintings of life on Raymond Island
evoked in more than one visitor, mem-
ories of family picnics, swimming in the
lakes and generally ‘messing around in
boats’.
Carpet
After 12 months of hard work, the gal-
lery is always in need of serious clean-
ing, patching and painting. It’s a major
undertaking, usually carried out at the
end of January with the help of volun-
teers. Unfortunately, this year it had to
be cancelled while the foyer floor was
ripped up, floorboards replaced and
new carpet installed. We might not
have a rejuvenated gallery space but
we do have a rejuvenated reception
area! And it looks very professional.
An alternative maintenance period
has been allocated in July to allow the
gallery spaces to be refreshed. Please
see the calendar overleaf for details. If
you are able to help with maintenance
tasks, please register with reception.
Touring exhibition
Pages or Not – It’s a Book! has just
concluded its extended tour at Maffra
Exhibition Space. It is the first touring
exhibition of artist books by local artists,
and the most successful touring exhibi-
tion EGAG has ever produced.
Contributing to its success is the gen-
erosity of artists who have loaned their
books for such an extended period and
the volunteers and staff who helped
transport books and display cases and
conduct workshops.
Books …Beyond Words – evolution
The pace is picking up for the Book
Award Committee as they prepare the
final promotional material, sponsorship
applications and receive entries for
August’s artist book award exhibition.
A category for East Gippsland artists
has been introduced and sponsored
by EG TAFE. EGAG is grateful to the
early major sponsors, Tantaro Design
and TAFE, as well as Riviera Proper-
ties. Community College East Gipps-
land and King & Heath First National
are also supporting the award as minor
sponsors.
Monash School of Rural Health, BRHS
EGAG installs a new exhibition at this
venue every four months. While it is not
an ‘exhibition space’, it does provide
East Gippsland artwork with additional
exposure to a very different audience.
Presently, a selection of John McKen-
zie’s paintings are on show.
Mission
EGAG exists to promote, stimulate and develop arts and culture in East Gipps-
land through a program of high quality, innovative and accessible exhibitions and
activitites.
Management Committee
This committee was formed in 1992 to manage operations and maintain the
building as a public gallery. Meets 5.15pm, 2nd Wed of month at EGAG.
Friends of the Gallery
The Friends group enables people interested in the arts to support and promote
EGAG, and receive member benefits. Meets 4.15pm, 2nd Wed of month at EGAG.
You are welcome to attend the Friends meeting, simply call ahead to confirm.
