ABSTRACT
This document describes the framework for dissemination activities and
communication strategy of the SDI-EDU project. First of all the main
project objectives and target groups are summarized. An involvement and
feedback of target groups is necessary for the success of the project. The
core part of the dissemination plan is a sophisticated dissemination and
communication strategy and tools consisting mainly of the project’s portal,
general and scientific publications, workshops targeting the final users,
SDI-EDU corporate identity etc. All these issues are stated and described
in this document as the crucial parts of proposed dissemination and
communication strategy. For the wildest possible dissemination of the
SDI-EDU project the networking with related EU projects is also given in
this document. Finally, there are mentioned key milestones for
dissemination in this dissemination plan.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED
The SDI-EDU project aims to transfer former experience from EU research projects dealing
with education in SDI spatial planning as Humboldt and Naturnet Redime towards planners in
European Regions and municipalities. The project will use innovative educational methods of
Naturnet Redime project combining methods of distance vocational training, e-learning and
knowledge sharing that will allow transfer the experience and that will teach how to deal with
SDI for spatial planning for real users. Project will also transfer newest research results from
Humboldt and transfer it into research courses.
TARGET GROUPS
SDI-EDU will develop training environment supporting
• spatial planners
• architects
in utilisation of Spatial Data Infrastructure.
The training environment produced will demonstrate the utility of our approach for
developing educational programmes that will increase understanding of SDI building on
both local and regional level and the tools used to make decisions that affect regional
development. As recognized by the SDI, this increased understanding will allow more
informed and equitable planning.
INVOLVEMENT AND FEEDBACK OF TARGET GROUPS
SDI-EDU is based on a bottom-up approach. An important part of the communication plan is
the involvement and feedback of target groups to define their requirements and to validate the
project results. This includes project partners of SDI-EDU as well as external institutions and
other private and public users and target groups. Communication with those groups will take
place via questionnaires, papers and articles, internet and mainly via events (workshops,
seminars, professional education events, vocational trainings).
An important role of the dissemination activities is validation of project results. The aim of
the validation is to ensure and to raise the quality of the SDI-EDU products. Several questions
can be identified concerning validation:
• Who is addressed by the SDI-EDU products and what are their interests?
• Who has to be involved for further activities to ensure sustainability of the SDI-EDU
results?

for dissemination of SDI-EDU results
The mentioned targets groups and have specific interests in the field of spatial data
infrastructure. The SDI-EDU results should be communicated in the way that fits to the needs
of the target users.
DISSEMINATION AND COMMUNICATION STRATEGY
The Dissemination and Communication Strategy includes several interconnected objectives. It
aims at providing information about project issues and project results for the project partners
and supplying each project partner with feedback of the other partners and the target groups,
as well as informing broader public and possible future users of the ongoing project results.

PRESS RELEASE
A press release should be sent to journalists to announce something new. The press release
should be simple, well written and written in the journalists‘language and be no longer then
one A4 page. This press release should focus on:
• the main objectives of our project and the rationale;
• planned end results and how we will contribute to stimulating innovation and
competitiveness through wider uptake and best use of ICT for national, regional or
local administrations, business, citizens and other relevant stakeholders;
and it should also refer to:
• the consortium;
• on how more information could be obtained.

SDI-EDU WEBSITE
SDI-EDU website will provide the prime online access point to the project and it will be the
project public showcase to external institutions. This website will be used as a prime public
dissemination tool, making available the content derived from the project output such as
presentations, publications and demonstrations. The website will provide updated news on the
progress of work packages. The website will also provide private access to a collaborative
work environment where members of the consortium will build the knowledge concerning the
project to maximize the synergies between different partners in the implementation of the
various work packages.

SDI-EDU GEOPORTAL
SDI-EDU Geoportal is a package of applications that allows you to work with maps in web
environment based on OGC Web Services.
The geoportal will be accessible at: http://portal.sdi-edu.zcu.cz
Catalogue
The catalogue client allows you to search metadata using OGC CSW. There is a possibility to
show the detail information of the record.

Map
The map client allows to view maps based on OGC Web Services and other formats (Google
maps, KML, MapServer, GML).
Basic functions:
• Viewing web services (OGC WMS, WFS) selected by user from the catalogue or
directly by address.
• Saving user defined map project on local hard drive a re-loading of this saved
composition (OGC WMC)
• Distance and area measurements.
• Searching in maps.
• Inserting user defined objects into map.
• Large format printing in PDF.
Showing legends, metadata and querying in map.
PROJECT WORKSHOPS FOR COLLECTING OF USER REQUIREMENTS
An important part of work will be to analyse the current SDI in project regions, which will
define needs for training and transfer of experience. This will be done on the base of local
workshops. There will be at least one workshop in each project country.
GENERAL PUBLICATIONS
Within the project we should create dissemination material such as brochures or leaflets for
their dissemination activities. The aim of general publications is to maximize the awareness of
the project for the general public, promotion of the SDI-EDU project, its vision and concept.
SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS
Scientific publications presenting technical aspects and solutions of the project should be
disseminated in peer-reviewed conferences, journals, books.
KEEP UP COMMUNICATION
Communication activities should not stop once the project has finished. We will keep up our
communication channels for some time after the project end. The minimum option would be
to maintain and update project website, but we should decide to be also more pro-active.
Further communication activities can be envisaged, like press releases on follow-up activities.
Not only will it give visibility to the great work, it also can generate follow-up interest and
business opportunities.
