Since a disaster like this had never occurred before and the company involved did not take the proper measures of remediation, Bhopal continues to suffer the environmental contamination produced by the release of MIC. Donations and medical/volunteer assistance has been provided to some of the victims and their families. Monetary compensation has also been provided. Union Carbide accepted responsibility and agreed to a $470 million settlement out of court (which would have been billions had this incident occurred in the US)
