2. Greece is located in Europe and is
the southernmost country located on
the Balkan Peninsula. It lies between
Italy and Turkey, and is just below
Albania and Bulgaria. It is
surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea
towards the south, and the Ionian
and Aegean sea to the Eastern and
Western sides of the country.

3. Greece has a warm- Mediterranean
climate. It has dry, hot summer days
with usually a stiff breeze in the
evenings. In the south, the winters
can be calm and mild, but can get
much cooler in the northern areas
with temperatures dropping below
zero. The Islands on Greece have
rainy season that runs from
November until March.

4. The population of Greece is ranked 74 in the world at an
estimated 11 million. 18% of the population is over the
age of 65 and about 15% in under the age of 15. There
are about 98 men to every 100 women and a population
density of 84 per sq. km.

5. The capital and largest city is Athens.
It is one of the world’s oldest cities
with its history spanning around
3,400 years.
CITIES
Thessaloniki is another major city. It is
second to Athens in economy, industrial,
commercial and political.
6. FOOD
Greece is famous for their
food and wine. The most
popular dishes include:
Greek salad, Moussaka,
Pastitsio, and Kotossoupa.
Some of the best places to
eat are Dinner in the Sky,
and Karamanlidika both
located in Athens.
7. FESTIVALS/HOLIDAYS
New Year’s Day: The Feast of Agios
Vassilis is celebrated in church
services. Greek families cut the
vasilopita, a bread with a coin inside
that brings good luck for the New
Year. This is also the day when
children are given their Christmas
gifts.
February- March: Apokries is
celebrated by three weeks of
feasting and dancing and take
place in Patra, Xanthi, Corfu
Island, and Rethymno.
8. Roughly 97% of the
population are members
of the Greek Orthodox
Church. It is the prevailing
religion of Greece. The
church is self-governing
and has a significant
influence in economic and
political policies.

9. Greece is a peninsular and
mountainous country. The
mainland consists of high
mountains, fertile plains, pine
forest and scrub-covered
foothills. The islands account
for one-fifth of the country's
land area. It has the largest
coastline due to its many
islands. Two-thirds of the
population lives in urban areas.

and galleries.
• Mereora: The Greek word
means suspended in air,
which describes the cliffs
that rise more than 1,200
feet and overlook the
villages of Kalambaaka and
Kastraki.

When visiting Greece, be aware of pickpocketing, especially
if you’re caring an extra amount of money on you. Also be
aware of large crowds and the steep steps that lead off
some of the islands.
