With internet usage becoming increasingly popular, paper versions of news are dying out. Most newspapers are going bankrupt. Through my application I will preserve our school newspaper, through advertisements so that it has a future.
The loss of newspapers may seem like something that is completely insignificant, but newspapers are a vital part of history. Before there was television, internet and radio, there was always a written form of news, a newspaper. For centuries the newspaper was the only form of news available. It was how people knew the happenings of the world at that given time.
The earliest form of a newspaper came about somewhere around 59 B.C. It was the Roman ActaDiurna. The Acta was Julius Cesar’s way of notifying the public about events both political and social. We see more of what we know today as newspapers with the invention of the printing press by Johann Gutenberg in 1447. Because of the invention of the printing press, ideas and knowledge were exchanged in Renaissance Europe.
The 17th Century is when history sees newspapers begin to appear on a regular basis. They originated in Western European countries. These early newspapers typically included information from Europe. They would sometimes feature news from Asia and America. These newspapers rarely featured news from home rather they would feature news from another country, like gossip. So for example, England would speak of some scandal in France, while France would do the same about England.
Newspapers were highly censored. Newspapers were not typically allowed to print topics that had the possibility of putting revolt in the minds on citizens or push citizens to distrust their ruling body. At the end of the English Civil War however, newspapers did have headlines announcing the Beheading of Charles I. Oliver Cromwell attempted to hold back newspapers a day prior to the execution. This is most likely what pushed Sweden to pass the law that protects freedom of press, something all journalists hold dear. Newspapers have come a long way. With technological advances however, the question is raised, will their rein end? Newspapers are now online…for free. Those who aren’t getting their news online are getting it on the radio or from television. After all there are over what, a million channels now right? Cable television or not, news can be accessed and lets face it what’s easier, having the news told to you or reading it yourself?
Advertisements are where most newspapers get their revenue. Businesses pay to have their advertisements published in newspapers. When a newspaper is going bankrupt, it means that they’re having trouble selling advertisements.
When a business chooses which paper they want to advertise in, they take into account how popular the newspaper is. That’s where readership comes in. The readership is the amount of people that read the paper. The readership determines how popular the paper is. So If a business sees that a newspaper has a readership of over one thousand, for example, the business is going to advertise with that paper over a newspaper that has a readership of over five hundred.
Internet usage has increased in the past ten years. Now that news can be obtained online quickly and for free, paper versions of newspapers are becoming unfashionable. Why pay for something you can get on the internet for free? It would seem that the future of newspapers lie with the World Wide Web.
As the world wide web has become increasingly popular, online databases have as well. Newspapers have taken to having online databases. On such databases, articles are accessed for free in most cases. Those who read the paper now have free access to articles they would read in the paper for free online. Newspapers are losing business due to the rise in internet usage and having free online versions of papers.
News can now be obtained through the radio and television. With busy lives we lead, we don’t always have time to crack open the neatly folded pages of a newspaper. We listen to news on the way to the office. We come home and do work then watch the news before bed.
With the filing of Bankruptcy we lose many of the newspapers we see today, newspapers such as The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Miami Herald and The Philadelphia Daily News (topping the list) are on the endangered list. These are the newspapers that face bankruptcy. Bankruptcy takes jobs.
The future of newspapers as well as the future of journalism seem to be online. However with so many newspapers going bankrupt finding a job in journalism is getting harder and harder.
As stated previously, newspapers get their money from advertisements. So naturally, reining in advertisements is a sure fire way to save a newspaper from going bankrupt. What some newspapers have started doing is charging for online content. When they charge for the online content they make more money off of it. Reining in advertisements is the way I’m going to help preserve the Viking Call newspaper. Getting advertisers to pay to place their advertisements in the school paper will prevent the Viking Call from going bankrupt.
