The earliest evidence is associated with burials. This is a period of seafaring, the Viking civilization who conquers many. Burials were often done in ships – filled with valuable items and sometimes set off to sea.
Usually associated with the burials of a great warrior – he would be buried with helmets, shields, and in a burial costume. Due to the climate – much of the natural items have decayed.
Use of colored glass that is set into prestamped metal work that has been guilded and fired to heighten the powered glass set into the shells.
This is a ceremonial purse clasp – buried with a warrior. Focus on abstract patterning, showns human animal combinations – common for the art throughout this region.
Vikings = the great seafaring peoples of the north – constructing many ships
Shows an animal abstract pattern.
Carpet produced is exquisite – shows interlacing of intricate designs. Manuscripts contain texts from the four gospels – containing illustrations of one of the evangelists. Carpet page is the front of the book – shows an abstract image, in this case, the image of a cross – in a geometric style. Usually a monk would produce something like this – this act is associated with piety and prayer.
This page of the Koran was found in Ireland – suggests that it was collected by the Irish – who were interested in the type or ornamental design.
The book of Durrow – there are images unlike in Islamic art. A highpoint of the time – produced in Scotland
Shows the carpet page of the manuscript – shows the first two letters of Christ’s name in Greek. Much more elaborate, use of gold, represents the highpoint of art in this period.
Classical influence – figural images, reduced to patterning. St. Matthew is shown in classical garments and similar to classical traditions in art. Above him is a symbol – evangelists were associated with figures – Matthew’s is a winged man. Shows an awareness of Classical traditions and an effort combine them to make a new style.
Islamic was the official art of this period, and they were allowed to set up monasteries to produce art.
A book that talks about the texts of the apocalypse with elaborate stories and illustrations. Windows show horseshoe arches
Arches similar to the cordoba mosque – shows Islamic influence
Introduction of Christian ideas into this period – showing figures. Exchange of ideas between Christian and Islam.
