5. There Are Different Ways to Listen!
Just like with reading, you can use different skills
when you listen
For example, with reading, you have learned:
To find the main idea
Scanning
There are skills you can practice to listen more
effectively
6. Selective Listening
What – selective listening happens when you do not
focus on all of the words being spoken, just the
specific information you are interested in
When – you would use selective listening when you
were interested in learning a specific piece of
information
What situations do you think this might apply in?
Why would you listen selectively?
7. Why Learn Selective Listening?
To learn
How much does something cost?
What are the hours of a certain business?
Is there a process you need to follow before going somewhere?
Etc.
To save time
Know what you need to before doing something so you don’t
have to repeat a step or do something unnecessarily
8. How?!
When learning a new language it can be very hard to
know what is important to listen to and what isn’t!
It’s a process
Just like with everything you’ve learned, selective
listening takes practice
9. Tips for Listening Selectively
Plan
Think ahead about what you want to learn or what you want to
know so that you will know what to listen for
Write down questions you want to have answered, the
information you want to obtain. For example
How much will this cost?
Where is this located/what is the address?
What time does the program start?
10. More Tips…
Listen
Listen more than once if you need to, call back and listen to the
recording again
Ask whomever is speaking to repeat the point that was
interesting to you
Write
Notes with information you are interested in (while you listen)
Questions you would like ask to receive clarification
Words you don’t understand
11. Let’s Practice!
From our work this week it is clear that you all enjoy
watching movies!
Audio-recording from a movie theatre that lists:
Movie times
Theatre location
Costs
Deals
12. First Listen
We will listen to this recording twice
First time
As a group

14. Second Listen
Second time
Looking at our handouts
Listen to complete the information on your handout
Now, let’s practice our selective listening skills
Look at your handout
Let’s review the information you will be listening for
Write down the information from the recording that answers
these questions or fills in these blanks
15. Notice…
Were there any words or terms you did not
understand?
Kitty-corner
Box office
We usually review new vocabulary before we do an
exercise!
With selective listening is not necessary to
understand every word you hear as long as you
understand the information you require
