Fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas provide over 85% of the energy in the United States and are formed from the remains of ancient organisms. Coal forms from compressed plant matter, oil forms under heat and pressure from ancient organisms, and natural gas was formed underground and was first discovered in Iran. Fossil fuels are refined in industrial facilities to produce gasoline, diesel, and other fuels from their raw forms.
