1. Personal Skills Audit
Name: Joshua Martin
Skills acquired
How did these skills
contribute to the creation of
your product?
Digital technology
- What
equipment/software
packages did you use to
produce your
production?
I learned how to set up a
camera onto a tripod and adjust
it to get the angles and shots I
need.
Being able to set up a camera
allowed me to be able to use
different kinds of shots in my
opening sequence efficiently.
I learned how to use
Photoshop.
Being able to use Photoshop
allowed me to be able to modify
images, which were used in my
planning and evaluations.
Post production
- What software did you
use to create your
production?
- Discuss specific features
of the software.
I learned how to use iMovie and Being able to use this software
Final Cut to be able to edit my
allowed me to be able to edit
sequence.
my sequence how I wanted it
and in a way that would be
efficient. Without this skill my
sequence would have been in
the order and way it was shot,
meaning it would have been
messy.
How will you develop these
skills during the A2 project?
I will be using cameras more in
A2 so I will be getting even
more experience using them.
This will allow me to be able to
make an even better project.
During AS I spent the first part
of the year trying to learn how
to use this software, but now I
can already do this I wont be
wasting any time doing so.
Using these programs even
more will allow me to learn how
to use them even better,
allowing me to be able to make
a better project.
2. Research and Planning
- What tasks did you
complete when
preparing to film your
sequence?
- How did your planning
help the smooth
progression of your film?
Using conventions of real
media texts
- Which texts did you
analyse?
- Did you take any
inspiration from the
conventions found from
your research?
Before starting to make my
sequence I researched several
things. I looked at the
conventions and history of
horror, studied an opening
sequence of a horror movie as
a whole and as a 9 frame,
deconstructed titles and handed
out questionnaires.
I also planned out what I was
going to do. I drafted down
some initial ideas, made a list of
everything I would need such
as props and actors, I wrote a
script, which was then
developed into an animated
storyboard, and I did a risk
assessment.
I looked at an opening
sequence for a nightmare on
elm street both as a whole and
as a 9 frame analysis.
Doing these things allowed me
to create my sequence in a
smooth and efficient manner.
Without doing this I would have
no doubt changed my mind
several times during production
and wasted time and resources.
After already doing planning
and research during AS, I now
know how to research and plan
what I am doing more
efficiently, which will allow me
to make a better project as it
will run more smoothly.
Doing this allowed me to be
able to see how an opening
sequence for a horror movie
should be and what key
features it has.
After already looking at an
opening sequence I now know
how to analyze them as I have
had more experience doing so,
so during A2 I will be able to
analyze clips better.
3. Creativity
- were our ideas for your
portfolio imaginative and unique
or did you adhere to
conventions?
In my sequence I tried to think
slightly outside the box whilst
still staying in the conventions
of the horror genre. I decided I
would make a sequence for a
type of movie, which isn’t made
very often as the horror genre
contains too many slasher
movies, making the genre
become dull.
Doing this helped me be able to
be creative rather than imitating
something else. If I decided to
just do a general slasher style
movie I would have no doubt
made a near copy to something
like Friday the 13th.
Doing this has helped me get
used to thinking creatively,
which will allow me to come up
with broader ideas during my
A2 project.
